Fulham (H) Post Match Thread

Manchester City defender John Stones speaking to BT Sport: "We said after the Champions League game that we wanted another clean sheet and to keep that run going. We knew what we were up against and we set out from the start.

"Every game we play in, we can always score more and we're frustrated with ourselves but it's good just to get three points. I'm sure the boys, the strikers, will be frustrated with the chances they haven't taken but it's three points.

"The manager demands a lot from us and expects a lot from us. We're all fighting for our places. When we get our chance, you have to take it. It gives us healthy competition. We know what's expected of us. We know if we don't deliver, there's always somebody fighting for that spot. It's what's done us so well in the last five years. Everybody has high standards and we try to keep them there.

"I said before the game it was another step forward and a chance to put a mark on the season. We're solely focused on each game and this one we did, came through with three points and everybody's words transpired onto the pitch. We have to keep this winning mentality going."

Good to see JS taking in what Pep is saying, done really well and hope he keeps it up all season...
More from Manchester City defender John Stones speaking to BBC Sport: "It's not disappointing. As defenders, we're over the moon with the clean sheet. It's always difficult when they play five at the back and they caused us problems.
"As the game went on we were persistent and kept our cool. We could have had more, but that is something for us to look at and improve on.
"On a personal note, two clean sheets, I'm made-up and enjoying my football."

Enjoyed that as we played with more purpose and innovation in the opposition area. Big forward steps for Stones again and Mahrez was very good again.

Credit to Fulham for trying to play football and not stacking the defense.

im sure we have made the least substitutions than any other team in terms of numbers and play time - if not it has felt like it.

Average opposition I know but our back 4 is looking the best it has in a long time. Apart from rotation I would try to keep the back 4 as it is

Putting aside the fact we couldn't score in a brothel......that was an excellent performance, particularly the first half.We ran out of steam a bit in the last 15/20 mins or so,and i would have liked to see subs being made, but still we battled brilliantly and passionately.

Difficult to criticise anyone, although Sterling still looks off,but a special mention for Mendy who looks a different player, and also Mahrez, who has clearly given his head a wobble and both he and our team look all the better for it.

Stones carrying on his great form, and Jesus was awesome too, working his nuts off for the team and doing the job of 2 men.

Top 4 too!! ;-)
Tosin Adarabioyo was great too, quality academy product.

Onwards and upwards.

Would have liked to see some of the fantastic build up rewarded with the finish but overall can’t have many complaints.
Mahrez the best player on the pitch for the second week running.
I’m sure there will be moaning about lack of subs but I expect around 8 changes for the midweek game with players getting the rest they need and others getting the minutes they need.
Another good day at the office. Onwards and upwards.

Hardly anyone that played today will start in midweek and I imagine some key players won't even be asked to warm the bench. Wouldn't be surprised if even Steffen gets a UCL debut.

Cancelo aside, I'd expect all of today's players to feature next weekend so it's understandable that Pep gave them all 90 minutes.

Shame we didn't score more and our shooting from range in particular drives me mad but Fulham were very organised and managed to cut out a lot of crosses.

Good win, and a clean sheet.
Quite easily should have been 5 or 6.
Some really poor finishing. Sad to say, but we wouldn’t see the dippers missing chances like those.

Agree we couldnt finish a good breakfast at the moment . but the Dippers dont create chances like we do , its not an issue or even worth a comparison , when was the last time the Dippers won by 5 or 6 goals , never . They just grind results out and wait for the opposition to make a mistake , they create f*ck all in comparison to our team.

Because Pep will want to play all the players that didn’t come on today midweek with a group of EDS players. What’s the point in putting pointless minutes into the legs of Bernardo, Foden etc when they’re going to get a full game midweek?
It’s more to protect tired legs & potential injuries

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola speaking to BT Sport: "It's important to get a good run of points. For the chances we had, yes [we should have scored more], but it was the same in Porto. It's important that we won and that defenders don't make mistakes and we don't gift goals.

"We know the quality from Kevin [de Bruyne] in the goals and assists. He's so important for us. Just look at how he runs and fights as a modern footballer today. He is an example of this. He put all this together and every season it's massive.

"It's important to win games and clean sheets are a good fact, especially with the amount of chances we created again. The Fulham physicality was impressive. Scott Parker always has something tricky, you know, he did well against Leicester. Now everyone can beat everyone. That's why it's important for the victory and no injuries to go into the Champions League with fresh players.

"We have to wait until the end of the weekend but what's important is the feeling in the team. We will improve."

He’s obviously had a plan before next weekends Derby. 2 different teams for Fulham and Marseille and whoever is in form will earn their place. I personally think majority of that team will play next weekend and if anyone shines midweek will come into the reckoning as well.
I just hope to god Foden will be in the team next weekend.
Happy with the performance again. We didn’t leave 2nd gear and looked really solid again. Dias has galvanised the whole back line! Impressed with Cancelo again offered a threat going forward and solid. Impressed with little things Mendy did. I think Savage touched on it when Lookman squared him up. He didn’t sell himself and was proactive and read the situation when Lookman looked for a quick 1-2 and the ball went out for a goal kick. Just hope he can get some consistency ! Being greedy I wanted a few more goals but 3 points is the main thing and kept a little back for the GD tic schedule. Looking slightly rosy again

We played some nice stuff at times & got the 3 points so job done.
Hopefully we'll start taking more of our chances & then watch us go
