That is a completely separate issue to foreign/HG squad designations.

And I'm pretty sure every single one of our foreign EU players would meet the criteria for a work permit today.

Not to mention the FA & home office would just loosen their work permit regulations because the fact is they want footballers paying millions in tax in the country, and the only reason the current rules are so strict on non-eu players is because of the fact they can't regulate EU nationals from coming in.

Regardless of it being a different issue, it is going to be huge. And think of all the EU youngsters in our development squad. They would struggle to meet criteria.

Sure, the top clubs sign top players (but not always). But think of all the clubs who make a business of signing cheap players and selling them on. Brexit has the potential to be the biggest change to the Premiership since the wholesale employment changes in the early nineties.

Then there's contract renewal issues. As a hypothetical. Three years time and Silva's contract is up. He's no longer a regular Spanish international and cannot meet that criteria. Contract cannot be renewed. It happens already for 'foreign' players.

I'm not banking on any government bending the rules for footballers, although they might. They also might not because such an arbitrary exemption would be open to legal challenge by other categories.

Also don't believe this govt gives a flying frack about taxes, other than letting their ilk avoid them.
