Gaming PC Advice

@The Silver Surfer
I meant to say that there is a possible downside to your existing PC (similar to the Medion one I bought for the son) in that the Windows OS license is probably tied to the MB Bios chip. That means that you can probably upgrade everything but the MB without having to buy new OS software.

I've probably already confused you enough ;) but Tomshardware do quarterly system builds although they do use modest overclocking to get better performance which may glaze your eyes. It gives you an idea of a balances gaming rig at various price points. The Q4 2015 one has a Lan box which would be something similar to what your looking for at around £600 or so.

There's not much relevant to you in the Q1 2016 one but the Q2 one should be out in the next couple of weeks I think.

Well I've been at Scan in Horwich today, really helpful and put together a build for £620 - but I have to build it myself, still I can pay £15 for insurance in case I fry it!

Just use an anti static wristband and get any pets out the room when building it up boss, good luck :-)

Haha cheers mate, just a bit apprehensive with the motherboard mainly as I last tried to do this six years ago with a board I got off ebay but it popped and I think it was to do with some dimm switch being in the wrong position. This being new I hope its just a case of screwing it in and plugging the respective bits in.

Anyway, here's the sum of its parts for anyone interested.

Case: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/in-...e-case-side-window-ez-hdd-swap-usb-30-w-o-psu
Processor: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd...re-37ghz-4ghz-boost-95w-with-near-silent-cool
Board: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/asu...ta-raid-pcie-30-(x16)-d-sub-(vga)-dvi-hdmi-ma
PSU: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/650...rossfire-single-rail-54a-plus12v-1x120mm-fan-
Wifi: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gig...al-band-80211ac-bluetooth-40-pci-e-20-externa
SSD: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/240...c-flash-read-450mb-s-write-450mb-s-85000-iops
HDD: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb...014-sata-6gb-s-7200rpm-64mb-cache-8ms-ncq-oem
RAM: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb...c3-12800-(1600)-non-ecc-cas-9-9-9-24-xmp-150v
Graphics Card: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb...7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1279mhz-boost-1342mhz-cores

Particularly happy with the processor (just slightly under i5 spec) and motherboard - combined price £100. They did an i5 and motherboard combined for £250.

Going to pick the bits up this weekend hopefully.

What about the OS?

What about the OS?

yeah windows 10. Wondering though weather its possible to the product key from his old machine to save £70 odd quid.

Still if I do that i'd probably try to put a bent version of Windows on his old machine because i'd use that machine - and if i do it won't update will it??

If you want to wear the eyepatch, get yourself a windows 7 ISO and install that then put daz's loader on it ;)

If you've got the product key then try it first without a doubt. You can always sort the old one out after the fact.

yep you can lift the windows key, usually with the loader people use to validate hooky copies, might be called windows toolbox these days or similar

Just an update, got the bits last monday, started building it straight away and apart from a couple of wobbles got it all working. Unbelievable just how fast windows 10 installed.

Just having one problem, my sons existing headset that has a built in mic connected to his old pc through one jack.

But on this the mic doesn't work. There are jacks on the front and back of the case for both speaker and mic. I bought a connector (female to 2 male jacks) for the headset but it still doesn't work.
Now there are settings for sound in windows, the asus motherboard and nvidia.
The graphics card is connected to the monitor via dvi-i port.
I've tried changing settings but nothing is working to get the mic on. Earphones are fine though!

Is it just a stereo splitter you're using?

I think you need something like this: Amazon product ASIN B0058DOWH6
I might emphasis that I'm not 100% sure on that and it may just be a software setting issue.

Sorted now thanks pal. I'd ordered the correct splitter for £1.50 off ebay and thought it wouldnt be here till next week. I got impatient and bought one from from asda and it was just a normal duel output splitter. But the correct one arrived later today so everything working great at last.

Rather than starting a new thread, I wondered if anyone who knows about these things could recommend something around the £500 mark? I've no idea how to build one, so would prefer ready made and don't really know what I'm supposed to be looking for, was considering this on amazon, Amazon product ASIN B00SL74K3W, It was the first thing I noticed around my price range with decent reviews and seems to play the stuff I want, any pros/cons? All I'm looking for is something to play games on without any bother and as is clearly evident haven't a clue where to start. Cheers for any help.
