Gardening Thread

Last year I really looked after my lawn, repaired all the thread bare bits etc.
Not touched it over winter and it's looked fine up until the snow and it looks like its 'dying' in patches. Just going a bit dark in patches.

Anything I can do or is it just a case of waiting for the better weather?

The seed you used for patches may not have been as frost resistant as you needed.
That or it had not all taken root proper.

Now is the best time to reseed as long as the patches see a little direct light.
Post pics if you like and i will be better able to see the issue boss.

Just bought 100 liters of plagron batmix for the main veg patch and propagation/seeding bed.
200 liters of perlite. 200kg vermiculite.
More liquid sea weed, molases, fish blood and bone meal (the ultimate outdoor nutrient imo)
Had my dutch friend send a soil culture over that will condition my soil well and making it want to keep a nice ph and ec level.

Strawbs made it through the frost with some fleece over it so need to split some of those apart now and get them bedded for this season.

I have a much more solid layout for year round veg now. Had enough of winter veg, i want to see tomatoes and cherry's growing.
I hate the way my fruit trees go totally bare and look dead with a passing glance.

On a side note, did anyone watch that bbc2 show about a gardening challenge.

Fuck me i thought i was a shit gardener and then i saw them. Some had been doing it 20 years and had no clue at all about the biology of the plants or veg.
Some gimp tried to use ph and ec meters alone to control his taters and neglected spacing, planting depth etc etc, he was onto a loser from the second he stuck em in the ground.
I must say though the judges and standards are totally wank and i would piss on the ex royal gardeners boots.
Nature is king and our stupid ideals of aesthetically pleasing food is pathetic in the extreme. Does it fucking taste good ? that is the main thing imo. Who gives a toss if the carrot was bent before being sliced ?.

Top bump mate, cheers.

Our maintenance work is all picking up again and this year I've officially started my apprenticeship as a Permaculture Teacher, so busy times so far.

We're building a lot of living willow sculptures at the mo, as well as doing plenty of coppicing and tree work and general tidy ups, which while a bit dull do help us put bread on the table in fallow times. Not much to see in my own garden at the moment and it's a bit dicey to start seeds up here while April, so I'm just getting my fix planting summer bulbs and feeding the soil.

All my "special plants" propagation chambers are full with garden stuff atm. CO2 machine will get turned on soon to really help them rocket before being bedded down. 56 seedlings under 1200w metal halide (legal plants) atm.
I killed a few as i started feeding them adult nutrient tea (for special plants) by accident, burned them to fucking death xD

Good stuff jots on the teaching spot, well done indeed.

Just turned all beds over for the first time this year and mixed all the fish blood and bone in with vermiculite and pearlite.
Bought placcy coated wire to go around whole effing garden due to those shitting feline fuckers !. It will be good though for peas and other climbers.

Just need grass to dry out a bit more before first mowing.

Not very photogenic yet though so no pics.

Is there a good time for laying turf or can it be done any time of year?

NOW !

Mid summer is no good because it won't take well due to being to dry.
Also you want to use it in summer so easier to keep dogs and kids off before it gets to hot.

Cheers. Looks like it's a job for the weekend unless it's pissing down.
