Terrific player. I still remember watching those early Champions League appearances, seeing how he'd knock the ball 10 yards past the opposing full back and then just sprint all the way around him, pick the ball back up with ease and either blast it into the net or stick it on a plate for a Spurs striker.
It was something special, and while his career might not have turned out exactly as expected, he still played his part in essentially making Spurs relevant, winning bag loads of trophies, and getting Wales some serious credibility on the international stage, too.
His scoring record at Madrid is phenomenal, especially for a player who was so maligned by fans and some of his clubmates. And he was an absolute legend for Wales, of course. The WC was a lowlight, for sure, but they wouldn't have even been there without him, most likely.
Regardless of club allegiances and all that (Spurs generally piss me off and the less said about Real, the better), he's a player I loved to watch in his prime. Part of me wonders if he wouldn't have been better off accepting the alleged Cardiff offer and playing a season or two in his homeland, where he always seems to feel most comfortable, rather than going to the US, but that's the decision he made and he still managed to win some cup or other over there anyway.
Well done to him. Not the picture perfect career people might have imagined, but still a damn good one.
