Gareth Barry

I didn't think Fernandinho did that much in the first half except be nice and tidy, but you could see when Barry came on we lacked that edge in midfield that Fernandinho gave us.

SO, I take it you didn't see the first time, defence splitting pass, over the top, on the run, to Micah for his goal?

Pass of the season so far!

Barry is a great squad player to have . Look at how he played against united away !

So over the course of a summer he has gone from one of our most important players to past it?

Hmm not so sure, think he will be an important back up this season. (Plus he can play emergency left back its where he started his career)

I cant see the point in selling him we would get a couple of million max, might aswell keep him for the next 12months it will be more worthwhile than a million quid or two

I like Barry. He is an extremely intelligent footballer. He knows the game and the league inside out. Time for him to go? No way.
It was only what? 6/7 games ago he over ran United's midfield, he was class. Let's not forget United's midfield that day included Michael 'Pirlo' Carrick.

Barry would sit perfectly between Ya Ya & Fernandinho as the holding player. He screens the back 4 excellently and rarely looks slow in his stronger position of 'anchor man'.

I would also much rather have Barry as an emergency centre half, far superior to Garcia. Let's not forget he made his name as a talented centre half.

Barry is a must for next season.

Barry isn't particularly fast, we all know that.
But I think some on here decry him for that a bit too much.
He covers the ground fast enough when there is a challenge to be made.
He only lacks a certain amount of pace when he has to turn due to ball in behind. This mainly happens due to poor pass from us.
Most times his experience puts him in the correct position.

I think the get rid comments on here are because we now have some nice
new shiny players. I think Barry deserves a bit more respect than that.

Couldn't agree more. There's a reason why managers love Barry and that's because he is very good at his job. While I don't think we should offer him a new deal, he's still comfortably good enough to play against most Premier League teams and his experience will prove useful this season.

Barry knows that he will not be in our strongest eleven this season but he will give his all when called upon......he will be a valued squad member for his final season.

i'm not his fan, but Barry deserve to stay for his last season. Garcia and Rodwell might be learn something. same goes for Lescott.

barry has been on the decline for the past two season's, sure he look's good against lesser premiership opponents but against top teams who have more position press high and play at a higher tempo he has been found wanting, one year left on his contract on the decline and on high wages i just don't see any positives in keeping him.

the difference in the team's play when yaya and fernandinho are playing together as opposed to one of them an barry , rodwell or garcia is just unbelievable the hold team seems to play a quicker more fluent attractive football, the latter three just seem to lack the speed, technique, composure and confidence of the first two. rodwell is still young and has been showing signs of improvement since hes arrived but barry is only going to get worse an garcia was a mistake if we sell them both we should get enough money to buy a new midfielder who better suits the system.

Then that's who you play him against. It's a long season, hopefully around 60 games, and you need players who can come in and do a job. That's precisely how Barry should be seen.

Also, considering he's in his last year of his contract and 32 years of age, we'd surely only get £3M-ish for him. We can't replace him for that much, so we may as well use him wisely this season and let him go at the end of his contract.

I'd keep him its gna be a long season and we wil need experienced players at some point even in the cup games etc. still can do a job for city.

I never rated him since we signed him. I think he has done well to stay at the club so long. I think its best we sell him on. If we were to get some money with him in the last year of his contract then thats good business to get rid of his wages alone. I think the competition for places in the centre. Barry is behind a few now. Garcia I wouldnt be quick to write off yet. First season in a new league is always hard. I expect to see a better Garcia this season. He wont be happy to stay in the backround. For me he is behind Milner , Garcia , Rodwell and Yaya and Fernandinho look for me to be the midfield backbone this season with Milner , Rodwell and Garcia slotting into a 3 from time to time.

Its just for me others offer more than Barry. Passing for me has always been iffy. Never been the quickest and at times if your passing lets you down it shows badly just how bad a player he is up against the European teams hes a liability.

Disagree. Of course, Fernandinho and Yaya are, rightly, odds on to be first choice, and are the best footballers - some of the football we played last night in the second half was excellent. But Barry still has an important role to play. And to suggest he's only looked good against lesser opposition seems a bit daft - at the back end of last season he was arguably best player on the pitch at the swamp and in the semi against Chelsea. To be honest, I'm amazed that just a few months later, so many are convinced he's past it and should be shipped.

I always thought Barry links up play really well without grabbing the headlines with goals and assists. He also was good at breaking up the opposition's game and regaining possession. It meant that his contribution was not always noticed but I accept that this contribution is lessening and if he does not accept a new contract that reflects that we should sell him while he is worth a good fee.

I think Gareth will be be an invaluable member of the team in tough away games, both in PL and CL, when we will play Ya Ya and Fernandinho as well. We know Gareth isn't fast - he never has been - but we ought not to ignore the excellent qualities he still has and our new players will enable us to use these while compensating for his deficiencies.
