Man City investigate Garry Cook after disgraced exec took private jets on expenses

BLUNDERING chief executive Garry Cook was being investigated by Manchester City chiefs BEFORE he was accused of sending an offensive e-mail.
Cook quit on Friday following claims he sent an e-mail to cancer sufferer Dr Anthonia Onuoha – mother of defender Nedum – which mocked her illness.
But it appears Cook was already under close scrutiny.
His bosses had become concerned at spiralling running costs at the club – particularly involving travel by private jet and luxury limousines.
Although club owner Sheikh Mansour has bankrolled City’s transfer-market spending spree of nearly £300 million, the club had become worried by some operating costs.
It is believed the use of private jets when conducting transfer talks, as well as chauffeur-driven cars, were a source of concern to the Abu Dhabi hierarchy who ordered a spending review.
Director John MacBeath has been put in temporary charge of running City.
He joined the board in February last year and it is thought one of his tasks was to assess running costs along with finance director Graham Wallace.
Cook is believed to have left his post without a pay-off and to be at home in Portland, Oregon, with his family.
Cook’s wife Wendy and their two children returned to America in July – prompting speculation that Cook would follow.
It was felt Cook would wait until at least the end of the season before making a decision on his long-term future at the club. But that option was taken away by the vile e-mail, sent 11 months ago, which mocked “Ravaged by it!” in reference to Dr Onuoha’s cancer.
Dr Onuoha refused to comment last night, though it is believed she is unhappy at the lack of a formal apology from Cook.
