Gary "Mani" Mounfield RIP

If that's the Sunday night gig around 2000 I was in that boozer trying to score a ticket.
Breezed through the stage door once the band had started and found myself in 'the wings' about ten feet away from Mani.
Might have been the same night Mani slapped Gillespie for pissing about.
I'm usually good with dates / gigs / games but can't place this at all.

Cant believe it . One of ours . The music will stay forever . The Roses , and bizarrely , Primal Scream who Im scheduled to see at Mayfield Depot on Saturday. Sorely missed , lovely lad . Terrible loss of his wife.
I bumped into him on Market St about 7 weeks ago. Usual stuff , " Hows it going , what you up to , still following that old rubbish ? He was full of beans , he told me was doing a bit djing for the opening of the Adidas store on Market st.
Good boy .

Great interview with him.

Sad news when i heard it on the radio earlier. I met him a few times in The Best o' Brass in Mossley 10 to 15 years ago when he drank with his mate who lived in the town. He liked drinking there because he got no mither from those fawning over him and he didn't get pestered for his autograph, unlike most places in town when he was recognised. We talked music and football and had blue-red banter several times and he took being called a dirty rag well. Lol.

Mani was a decent down to earth ordinary guy who got famous as a bassist in a famous band, but he had had no Billy big bollocks airs and graces about him or i wouldn't have spoken to him again if he had.

I really like the Stone Roses and he was not only a top base player but a sound guy. Gone far too soon and the Roses won't be the same without him, alas.

RIP Mani.
Remember him being in the commercial one Saturday afternoon and getting plenty of attention but had time and pics for everyone Somebody put a roses tune on the jukebox , he just started laughing and said " you’re having a fuckin laugh "
Top bloke who seemed so grounded and sincere .
RIP Mani

I never once saw anyone asking for a pic in Best O' Brass, probably why he said it was his favourite pub, especially when my mate's gf was landlady as she did an after time lock in most nights. Half of the pub, especially the older drinkers didn't know who he was nevermind know he was a famous musician, and Mani like the hassle free anonymity on a night out in there.

Thinking back i could have asked him for a pic but it never crossed my mind at the time. I spoke to him like anyone else really, just one of the lads minding his own business who liked to chat and have a laugh and a few beers with local drinkers. Although the pub is no longer open I'll raise a glass to him later wherever I'm having a pint.

Really fuckin sad! Yesterday I was at a close mates funeral that finished with Waterfall. Came out of the funeral mid afternoon and my mate sent me a link about him doing a stint at The Salty dog in Northwich. I thought I'll have that! An hour later it broke that he'd passed away, it was the only topic of conversation from that point on. Terrible news. I was fortunate to meet him a few times(weirdly at 2 funerals of Moston lads) and he really was tha most genuine nicest none show bizz lad you'd ever meet,an absolute gentleman! I was having a good chat about music at the bar and my mate shouts "Dont talk to that bitter blue bastard Mani" Mani shouted back, "You've never been near O** Tr***** so don't you fuckin start". Funny as fuck! I knew his wife Emelda too back in the day who was good as gold. Those poor kids, just heartbreaking. RIP Mani. A true Manc legend. X

One half of the best rhythm section of the last 50 years.

Always felt during the reunion that Brown wanted the money, Squire missed playing big stages, Reni was there reluctantly but Mani just seemed ecstatic to be playing with his mates again.

This. Him and Reni had the funk. Didn’t get to showcase that as much when with Primal Scream.
2 of the 3 great Mancunian bassist trinity now sadly gone.

I went on holiday to Morocco a couple of weeks ago and met a woman on the plane who lived in same town i was going to two hours drive south of Agadir. I wasn't hitting on her as she said she was married but before departing the plane she gave me her number and said ring her to meet her and her hubby in a bar in town, so i did. Really nice Manchester couple who invited me to theirs for meals and drinks. We spoke about football(she's a blue he's a red) and we talked about music and the Madchester scene back ine the day.

They both knew several famous Manchester band members personally from the business they were/are in. And both said they knew Mani quite well and his late wife Imelda. I said I'd met him in a Mossley pub a few times and that was that before talking about something else.

I broke the news to them yesterday by text and 'Teresa' said she was devastated saying it's 2 years and a day since her best mate Imelda sadly passed away. No doubt they will be at Mani's funeral to pay their respects.

I said 'Teresa' to protect her anonymity.

Not a fan of the Stone Roses or Primal Scream for that matter so i'm the last one to talk about the musical side of things but he weas obviously liked and indeed loved by so many and will be missed by so many but what really gets me is his two boys, imagine losing your Mum and Dad at their age two years apart, truly awful for them, i just hope they have a good support network and things get a bit easier as time goes on, RIP Mani.

Johnny Marr, real name John Maher, his Mother was from a small area, just outside the town of Athy, County Kildare. Her family were very poor. Their Grandfather had taken off and left his Grandmother, a single parent, with 14 kids. She quite often took ill and the children would be taken in by various neighbours in the local area. Johnny Marr's mother always went to a family called the Farrell's. And Nancy Farrell was often spoken of in the Maher household as some type of Angel who rescued their Mother. It was a well worn tale down the years.

Fast forward to 1987, after the Smiths had split up, Johnny was visiting his parents, and his Mother mentioned that Nancy Farrell's grandson was in a band called the Stone Roses. It was only bloody Mani.

Below, Mani being presented with the 'Made of Athy' plaque, in County Kildare.

Stone Roses legend Mani: On receiving ...

Really was a top genuine guy. Loved United but loved the banter with any other rival fans. Told me once that he got lucky, could play a bit of guitar and that helped, modest with it. He mentioned that his dad was in business with Mike Doyle, restaurant I think. RIP Mani & condolences to your family and friends.

Feel so sad that Mani he's gone. I never had the pleasure of meeting him but a mate of mine from Sheffield was down at a gig in Finsbury Park. He bumped into Mani and got talking to him. Mani said "Let's go for a pint", and they did across the road and Mani bought as well.

It says so much about Mani how he was with people in so many accounts and how devastated so many of us are.

Those poor boys. Hope they are getting all the love and support that they need. Bless 'em.

Heartfelt condolences to them, his family and friends. Thank you for the brilliant music Mani. Rest in peace.

Wasn’t Dooley by any chance ?

Never heard a bad word said about him. Considering he was in two of the biggest bands in the country he could have end up his own arse. Seemingly the absolute opposite. Think that's the mark of the man.

Also, fucking ace tunes.
