A brilliant brace from Didier Drogba and another goal from Ramires clinched top spot in Group E for the Blues and took the pressure off the coach.

But Villas-Boas then claimed the English football media is more desperate for Manchester City to qualify from their group than for Chelsea to advance from theirs.

The Blues boss said: "I just think the reaction has been over the top.

"There's only one team in the country at the moment, and that's Man City.

"I hope they qualify, sincerely. But the attitude has been if they qualify they qualify, and if they don't they don't. That's not the same as with us. I will never criticise your editorial choices, but its the reality.

"People have taken stances that are out of this world. From criticising our players, from criticising our choices.

"From a Manchester United defender that says things like: 'I dont want to be one of the Chelsea players for this game. I couldn't play in this game. Its a difficult game to play in.' "This is out of this world for me. I don't believe this.

"So this is a continuous persecution of Chelsea, continuous aggression of one club. We have become your target. We have to accept it.

"But you have to accept that today was a brilliant win. Tomorrow, it's unfortunate for you guys because you'll have to write about a brilliant win for Chelsea qualifying first. It's a difficult win for everybody."

The United defender was a reference to Gary Neville, now a Sky Sports pundit, who had previous angered Villas Boas with comments about defender David Luiz.

Villas Boas also warned Frank Lampard, dropped for last night's win, that he faces a fight to get back into the Chelsea team.

The coach added: "There were inportant players left out, players of immense talent, not just Frank. "Today's selection ended up like this. Frank has been in a fantastic moment and will continue to threaten for the starting line-up.

"He will be in contention to come back for Monday. He is one of the greatest players in the world, as you know.

"But we wanted to keep possession with our three midfield players, to bring it down and play it out from the back, more solid. That was our choice."

Drogba, meanwhile, later revealed that he was only 80percent fit going into the match. The striker said: "I am improving.

"I haven't played that much since the beginning of the season. But in the last few games I have managed to get more time on the pitch and it is helping me a lot.

"There was a lot of pressure but when you start the group stages there are four teams and you have to keep going to the last day.

"So we still had a chance to finish top. The pressure sometimes can be positive."

Skipper John Terry said: "We left it too late in the group but we did the job. It was a good solid performance. The big man (Drogba) was fantastic. He held it up brilliantly.

Feeling the pressure methinks....

Cracking up and trying to instill a siege mentality before we play them. And beat them.

This guy is in the wrong job/country if he can't take criticism. I've noticed him in his interviews getting more and more irritable as the season has gone on. He doesn't have the charisma of a Mourinho and needs to learn how to handle the media better.

However, I did think it was odd on commentary when Neville said these are the games you hate playing in.

A chance to get into the last 16 of the Champions League at home and you wouldn't be up for it? Didn't understand that, although generally agree with his analysis.

AVB - "There is only one team in the country and that is Man City"

Yes do you wonder why Andre? This is because we are over performing in every prospect of the game breaking records left right and center, creating all the controversial stories that the newspapers love to write about eg. Balotelli and Tevez.. We are basically a football editorials dream at the moment.

You may have had all the limelight in Portugal with Porto last season but the PL aint no mickey mouse league. It has the biggest amount of hype, criticizm and bitching going on out of any other league.. so if the papers can find anything to create a stir they will write about it, it just so happens that Chelsea this season have been on the end of the majority of all the criticizm in the PL.

Quickly losing the plot... if we take care of them on Monday and they go on another mediocre run, he's done.

I've seen more shit claiming that if we don't get out of the group we're a failure than anything else anyway. That argument doesn't make any sense. Quite clearly doesn't read anything from English media outlets.

I don't think he was complementing us there. Even though his English is clearly spoken his literal translation is not the best. He didn't mean Man City are the only team in the Country that seem to matter or are getting praise. He was saying to the media, "Man City are the only team from England who are struggling in the Champions League and are the only English team that won't qualify yet they are not receiving any criticism but Chelsea who have qualified top of their group are being torn apart by the media". Basically planting the seed to the papers that Man City are escaping criticism. NOT that we are the only team in a good way. You need to actually see the press conference and then you will know what I mean, instead of reading it in print.

Where does he say Gary Neville is a blue? He is criticising the press for not going after us because we are probably not going to qualify but then criticising Gary Neville for being negative about Chelsea in his commentary. I think you need to read the Mirror headline again, you've misinterpreted it!!

Doesn't read any tabloids then...

He clearly feels that Chelsea are being got at unfairly. He's saying that the media are portraying it as Chelsea struggling in Europe when it's really Man City who are struggling and nothing is being said about that.
