Gary Neville

I don't think it is realistic to suggest that you can prevent isolated incidents of racism however tough the punishments become.

There have been laws to cover racially aggravated public order for many years. However In a crowd of 60,000 there will always be at least one idiot. To suggest that it is symptomatic of racism becoming worse within society as a whole is an easy connection to make but personally I feel it is wide of the mark.

Isn't the difference that this behaviour is more likely to be highlighted than previously? Players and fans feel more able to speak out when it happens. This is of course a good thing as it will deter the idiots from doing it in the future.

Well unless he was sat in the Spurs end yesterday and was responsible for the racist chanting im not too sure what the fuck he has to do with this thread/subject/incident?
You're either being disingenuous or you're an idiot.

He has made it acceptable for society to say and do racist things because he has repeatedly said and done racist things, and has been rewarded with the top job in the country.

No he has not made it acceptable because it is against the law to say such things.

But the law has not challenged him, so it is not unreasonable to think if someone with a platform such as the one he has can go unpunished (or even be rewarded) then everyone else can too.

Look im in general football and here to talk about the incident yesterday and Nevilles comments afterwards.

There is a whole political forum for posters to talk about Johnson.

Dear me...

Ask yourself has he made it acceptable to you?

Your mates?

I know for a fact he hasn't made it acceptable to me so I've little fucking clue as to what point you are desperately trying to make here?

Are you bothered about the racist incident yesterday or do you just want to talk about the PM?

Fuck me why is it a problem?

When did you last watch a game and sat their wondering what the sexuality of players was?

What is fucking happening to us as a society when people think this is an issue?

Didn't say it had anything to do with the fans curiosity over the players sexual preference.

However it is troubling that male players are part of a system where they fear being outed and can't freely express their sexuality.

Then you aren't looking very hard. Our PM has made racist statements in the past and his election to office has normalised this in the view of many. Number 10 then coming out and saying football needs to do more about racism comes across as somewhat hypocritical. Gary Neville was talking about this, and this thread is called 'Gary Neville'. That is what the fuck it has to do with this thread/subject/incident.

As a Jew it concerns me greatly but you can’t expect people in the stands to behave any better than those in the public eye. What if someone repeats the behaviour of a public figure at a football game (shouting bum boy for example?) is that acceptable or not. Do football fans have to conform to higher standards than politicians. Football and society need to get serious. It doesn’t matter who does it it’s wrong just wrong and it needs stamping out. Making apologies for anyone being racist be that the PM, Corbyn, Prince Philip or anyone else is wrong.

Its an entirely different conversation to this one mate.

Is anyone doing that on this thread or are you accusing me of doing so?

Seem to be some cherry picking of statements going on, picking the lines that suit the argument (there's a thread further up criticising various media outlets for the same thing) plus the usual and often deserved "Neville bating". I managed to read a transcript of what was said using an online link and Neville was equally condemning of politicians of whatever political persuasion they are, rightly pointing out their poor records. Where he didn't stray was towards newspapers and other media outlets, stopped by Jones most likely, who are basically two faced when it comes to racism.
I may be showing my ignorance here but who is Jones? and what did he do or say?

Neville needs to look no further than his pay masters.

What other set of sports fans have their intelligence insulted on a daily basis than football fans? The tabloid media bullshit which whips up hatred and tribalism is digested daily by millions in this country simply confirms it imho.
Never do they produce such crap for cricket, golf or rugby fans to read.
I’m perhaps missing the racist point but why is it only prevalent in football?

Never underestimate the power of the press.

Is anyone doing that on this thread or are you accusing me of doing so?

No, I’m absolutely not accusing anyone on this board and certainly not you. The point I was making was that people seem to think that behaviour at football and in society at large isn’t influenced by the wider culture - I think it is. Violence against certain groups - be it black people, Jews, LGBT etc will always increase when society is seen to turn a blind eye. I used to work voluntarily in grass roots football and believe me racism was institutionalised there - and people just accepted it because they wanted a chance. I can only hope it’s improved but some of the old coaches and scouts were a disgrace.

They would.

The Tory party campaign headquarters belonged to one of the executive directors of Sky.

That's another topic that can be debated downstairs.

Anyone that calls someone deluded for calling out racism needs to have a serious word with themselves.
"football is the most important export this country has" This is delusional! Talk about an overblown sense of self-importance!

I don’t really get the point you’re making. Are you angry that he said football is the most important export this country has?!
I think that was very obviously my point!! Over importance placed upon football is pathetic
