Gas & Electricity

Is it. That scuppers that then. Maybe somewhere else nice and hot. Thailand?

It’s not an absolute ban, but extra paperwork and conditions though.

If you want to be creative you could find places that have cheap university courses in English or in any language you know that have cheap tuition fees. Just an example.

Stay Limits within the Schengen Area: Counting the 90 Days
As such, UK citizens are now subject to the Schengen Area's visa-waiver stay limitation of 90 days within any 180 days throughout the entire zone. The count begins as soon as a traveller enters the Schengen Area until the day they depart.

No idea about Thailand, never been.

With a smart metre you can’t set a monthly tariff can you ? Seems like I was paying a fixed monthly £70 with some months over and under but now it comes out whatever I use
A smart meter should have no effect on how you pay for the gas and electricity over any other type of meter. It simply sends readings automatically to the provider more regularly than the consumer or meter-reader read ones.

How the energy used is paid for is down to the contract you have with the supplier. It sounds like you’re just paying for what energy you have been using each month.

How the fuck can EDF put our price up 54% while across the channel in France they are going up 4%. Its because we sit back and let the cunts walk all over us when the French would be out on the streets causing mayhem

The French have a very different energy mix to us.

Over 70% of their electricity is generated from nuclear and nuclear is not affected by gas prices. The rest of their electricity comes from renewables which also isn't affected by gas prices.

Meanwhile in the UK we only generate 15% of our electricity from nuclear and indeed a big chunk comes from renewables but a similarly large chunk (around 30%) comes from burning gas when renewables fail.... I.E, when the sun isn't shining and the wind isn't blowing.

Moving forwards we have a choice, we can rely more on renewables and continue to supplement it with gas or we can supplement renewables with a vast number of new nuclear powerplants as the French do.

The problem is the green lobby won't allow nuclear powerplants to be built, not to mention they are expensive and obviously we can't burn coal so we're left with burning gas and that's why your tariff is doubling, because gas is now very expensive.

Or storing energy better.

Cyprus is non-Schengen so time there doesn't count towards the 90 days. Thailand from about November onwards would be fine, but remember you still have clients to manage!!!!
With an 11 yr old child, I’m a long way from being able to do this :-). Seems a sensible option for those that can though!

Currently in a very rainy and very windy Shropshire. Good old British weather !

We don't store any energy, the government sold off the majority of our gas storage years ago. It made sense then because it was cheaper to buy gas than store it, until COVID came along gas prices were at their lowest for 15 years.

The best way to deal with electricity is to use renewable sources that aren't dependent on commodities and that's nuclear or wind/solar. Nuclear is an expensive option but it's by far the most reliable of any of them so couple it up with wind/solar and well prices should come down as generation is almost free.

The other option is to tear up green laws and start burning coal again which is basically the energy policy of places like China.

Maybe we need to reinvest in storage of both gas and electricity now that the landscape has changed?

Nuclear seems the most sensible route to go down, but as you say, it’s expensive to create the infrastructure.

Do we wait for fusion?

Then there’s fracking...

Coal is a diaster for the enviroment , we shouldnt do that

You can cut down as much as you want and wear umpteen layers like you’re going climbing Everest but is it not the standing charge that is going to the major problem seeing as though that’s gone up exponentially??
i have no idea how much the standing charge has gone up untill my next bills drop into my email but cutting back on gas and wrapping up must save, not had the CH on since the 1st of April and the next time it goes on will be October,so except for showers in my case which are gas and cooking i would expect a bill thats not excessive, fingers crossed

I live in a new build studio apartment (aka posh bedsit). My DD has been set at 33 quid a month since I moved in. Never had a monthly smart metre reading higher than 12 quid for the month. 8/10 quid is the average. Get refunds all the time.
Bulb haven't altered my DD amount.
I'm so relieved (so far anyway) but I'm glad I don't live in my old house anymore (old terraced built in 1878).
