Gas & Electricity

I hate this government. Some patronising tory sh*t was telling the public to buy supermarket own label to off set costs.

Doing that doesn't offset the extortionate energy bills, thicko.

as I said yesterday - where can we buy the supermarket own brand value 'leccy and gas that comes in a plain white pipe or cable with just GAS or 'LECCY written on it and solve the issue completely?

More shit to hit more fans later when interest rates go up to 1% and the BoE revised inflation estimates for 2022 up

Just checked my gas rate. Excluding VAT I was paying 2.53p per KWh of gas up until July 2020. Since then it's gone up to 6.99p per KWh, a total rise of 176% no doubt with more to come in October. Three rises of 24%, 21% and 84% in less than 2 years, and that's not including the standing charge rip off. It's no wonder buses in London are full of old people riding around all day to keep warm.
Whilst defenders of the government would no doubt say the wholesale price of energy is out of their control, there's absolutely no doubt that they could do something about the price charged to consumers like they're doing in France and presumably plenty of other countries.

They could have cut the VAT on energy bills.

They didn’t because not a fuck could they give and those windfall profits had to be protected.

Cutting VAT would barely scratch the surface with it being just 5%. As we produce quite a lot of the gas that we consume there are plenty of measures that the government could have imposed. Instead they have opted to allow the market dictate the prices paid which bares no relation to the production costs. At least one of the energy providers have said a windfall tax would not have changed their investment plans and it's a no brainer that as a one off measure this should be implemented. The government have no problem with consumers being squeezed but on the off chance a squeeze on the corporate sector would reduce the income of the richest 5% they won't touch the energy companies. Announcement from Shell today that they've made $9.1bn profit in the last 3 months. Even if the government took a couple of billion of that, their profits would still be double what they were 3 months earlier.

Agree entirely but I would take 5% off my yearly bill right now.

To listen to company after company tell us they have made Billions yet again during this crises is a piss take.

Profiteering, plain and simple.

Yet members of the working and middle class who are impacted by these bills will still vote for them at the next GE. The mind boggles. Giffords making already rich people richer whilst making themselves poorer.

You get the impression they're almost embarrassed by it. There certainly appears to be no O&G industry campaign against a windfall tax. It's almost like they expect one but the government seem to be doing their best to make excuses on their behalf for not imposing a tax. It seems the institutional shareholders of the O&G companies that will benefit most from these sky high profits have a disproportionate influence on government policy.

Todays Energy (Gas) market has four principle players, these are Producers who produce the stuff, shippers who buy the gas and pay for it to be shipped through the networks, and suppliers, those who people like you and me deal with to actually buy the gas. On top of that you have network owners these used to be just Transco or National Grid but now these have privatised and the networks are owned by different companies all over the country, you now also have privatised networks,,, don't go there.

Now all of the above businesses need to make a profit to survive, all grabbing a bit more.

Go back to the British Gas days, one company did the lot and was profitable - why did we need to change it? Competition you say. I say there has never been anything less competitive than the fuel market.

The market should be nationalised with one owner, that way they can set a gas price on a not for profit basis and sell gas at the same price/rate to everyone. Far more competitive for businesses if they all have to pay the same for their (fixed costs) gas.

If the business was nationalised the government could intervene and better control and influence the prices we all pay.

I agree with your sentiment but I cannot see that a Labour government would produce much more economic success. We need to radically reform our election system more along the lines of proportional representation..... How? God only knows, the only thing for certain is we need to do something different.

Mine has just gone up to £280 a month gas and lecky, our bills now are crazy
mortgage £650
Childcare £580
Council tax £164
Gas/lecky £280
Virgin £60ish
Car £170

Got our £150 gift from the government today, dropped in to the bank and received a letter from the local council to advise of it, mustn't grumble.

As an aside, had a new combi boiler fitted just over a month ago, gas usage has dropped dramatically since, even allowing for the warmer weather I expect to save a fair bit going forward, have already dropped the d/d from £244 to £187 for gas & electric, will continue to monitor it and drop it again if the trend continues, don't intend lining the pockets of Octopus directors and will pay what I think will cover the annual bill.

From Martin Lewis.

The standing charge, which is the amount you pay per day just for having a gas supply, is increasing slightly from 26.1p a day to 27.2p a day. "For electricity, there's a big (but not as big as gas) jump in the unit rate, which is going from 21p to 28p a unit. However, the standing charge is nearly doubling from 25p a day to 45p a day.
If not mentioned previously it was increased to pay for paying for the companies that went under

Not really fair if you are not one of the people who regularly swap around to fly-by-night chanchers who are responsible for the bill.

This government really is a bunch of crooks.

Wonder if the government will increase the frequency of the Winter Fuel Allowance to monthly to let old people heat their homes.
