How can Alaska be furthest east and west ?

Well. I think this is all a bit tenuous personally. But I'm assuming it's because Alaska crosses the international date-line. So if you define one side of that as most Easterly and the other side as most Westerly, then it is indeed the most Eastern and most Western state.
