It also limits your options down the line. If all your players are on 5 year deals then a 20 man squad turns over once every 5 years with 4 players going every year. Add in a few renewals and 4 becomes 2 or 3. That is about right.
Sign them all up to 8 years and the turnover rate drops to 2.5. With extensions it drops lower.
It means that your squad evolves at a slower rate and you get stuck with what you have got.
