General Videogame Thread

Bought Red Dead on PC again (after the PS4) and I don’t know what to tell you, it doesn’t grip me. I find it clunky and slow. It’s a gorgeous game and a good story but the actual ’game’ leaves a lot to be desired. I’m going to plod on tho cause it was 30 quid!

Restarted No Mans Sky, what a beautiful game, just repaired my ship and will take off to space soon, from the videos I’ve seen it just endless, so I’ll see where it leads me.

I must agree with this and I add something interesting that I read in the paper earlier in the week. This game has had such a rocky ride: hyped up before launch, it actually impressed me from day one, but some people complained it didn't offer the experience that the rumours had suggested (especially in terms of meeting other players). But five years of tweaks and updates later, it has to be said amazing stuff & well done to the makers:

Yeah I’m really struggling to find something to get into. Played Fifa, COD, god of war, Spider-Man now to death and can’t find anything to really draw me in. Would love a really good big open world RPG.
Dayz- I have been hooked for months. It is a woman unless you put in the hrs tho. The coms with other players and the general not knowing what the fuck can happen at any moment is unlike any other game.

I lasted an hour last night. Bored the fucking life out of me

Some help please with 2 things, mainly costs regarding Xbox Live Gold and Playstation Plus:

So a month ago as I was isolating & I paid £6.99 for a month of Playstaion online - mainly for golf and World of Warships. Not sure if I really got good value, the golf is so annoying, if I'm losing a match people play the full game, but if I get ahead they usually just 'go'. I can play against 'ghosts' human players who have played previous rounds and that is available without the payment and the advantage is they never give up! - its not quite the same as playing 'live', but in one way, its better.

Anyway, was thinking to renew (I usually get a card and redeem a code) but online, on my computer, the Sony website states 12 months for £49.99. However, when I use the Playstation itself, they are offering 50% off so - 12 months at £25 which seems really good value. Under that deal it states after 12 months it reverts to £49.99 automatically. What is to stop me signing up for that 12 months @ £25 and 364 days later cancelling it, to sign up for whatever new deal is available? or to get this offer do you have to commit to 24 months, the first year at half price, the second at full price? = total of £75, because I can't really justify that.

The reason ask is to do with my second question because I also have an Xbox and for some reason I just don't like paying for both PS Network and Xbox Gold at the same time, I just can't accept paying for both and the problem is, I really want to play this new Flight Simulator game. I used to enjoy Flight Simulator years ago and this one seems to be the ultimate development of it.

My PC can't manage it though - the graphics card is too old - but its just come out on the new Xbox so I started to think about that. But how complicated is it! Microsoft have really messed up here, with names I mean: Xbox One S or Xbox Series S, so similar, but one is old tech the other is new, its not easy. The pricing is weird too. Cash Convertors in Farnworth had a Xbox One S for £190 and a One Series S for £200! That seemed odd to say the least. I almost went with that, but for £50 I can get a new one, so I decided to wait. I was thinking £250 for the console £60 for the Flight Sim download code and sorted at just over £300 - much cheaper than a new gaming PC which would be nearer a grand.

BUT, Yesterday I heard about this deal: Xbox All Access: 'The Series One console + 24months Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, access to 100+ games and online multiplayer, with no upfront cost (with Klarna)'. The Xbox pass which I believe is Xbox gold and free games too is £10.99 a month, so 2 years would be £264 + £250 for machine = £514. This deal £20.99 x 24 = £504 is ten pound cheaper....and no big expenditure right now. This seems too good to be true, am I missing something? (plus what the heck is Klarna)?

My other worry: the guys in Cash Converters did warn me that this Series One Xbox has (only) 500 Gb space and these new games will soon fill that, assuming I get Flight Simulator, would that be it, or could I have a few more games too? I don't mind swapping them around as I don't play games that much in the football season, but I'd like to fit 4-5 games on it, at least.

P.S. Finally, I have also read that in the future Flight Simulator may be able to be played on the old Xbox over some sort of streaming service and I do have a good internet speed, should I just wait for that?

Sorry for the long post, its just so confusing right now.

@patrickkinney

Your playstation network offer of £24 months for £25 is a great deal. Go with that. Nothing to stop you opting out after 12 months, set the automatic recurring payments off. You can also pay through paypal, and block PlayStation recurring payments on the paypal app.

Don’t be tempted by the finance option for gamepass unless you prefer to pay monthly, it's not the best value deal.

You can get xbox series S brand new on amazon at the moment. There isn't a shortage, I'd pay a little bit more and make sure to get the benefit of a warranty rather than go through a reseller.

But a snag is that you won't be able to use discs, as it is digital only. You can get pre-owned disc games cheaper than digital codes. But it's only a consideration if you buy games this way.

If you haven't had xbox gamepass before you can upgrade and get 3 extra months for a £1 plus all your current gold subscription upgraded at 1:1 cover. But make sure you do it this way round, otherwise it will treat it like a currency exchange transaction i.e. 12 months of gold = 4 months of gamepass.

If you have had an account with gamepass before, it will cost you £10.99 for the extra month, and upgrade of current gold works the same as before.

You can always create a new fresh account if you aren't fussed about achievements and current friends lists etc. £1 for three month offer upgrade applies again

Check this out. No need to buy through official playstation or xbox sites if you can get a better deal from grey market seller.

The SSD will gill up quickly but you can always add additional memory, there is an official memory stick provided by Microsoft for any games optimised ffor the Series s/x consoles.

You can always stick in an external HDD for older games (previous consoles) not optimised for the series consoles.

You should be able to get 3 or 4 of the larger games on there. The biggest file size I have seen is 150gb.

Flight sim takes up 97gb.

The Xbox Series S, has 364GB of usable storage (136 is system memory).

Thought I'd give The Ascent another whirl. It's not bad but not great either. Definitely has promise though. Another ill probably pick up again in 12 months.

@Fode N The Hole

Thank you, that was such a detailed response, much appreciated. I have re-signed with Playstation and I will have a think about the other stuff. Definitely fancy getting the flight simulator for the dark winter months - listen to City on the radio whilst flying around sunny places AND it will keep me off the match day thread so all good for my MH!

Can't wait to get started on this later. Playing through the original 15 years ago was just an absolute joy. Free if you've got Gamepass too.

I had a good look at this - I dont put the hours in so I went for Escape from Tarkov instead. That is essentially the same game but you can operate over a series of raids building a character instead of having one life. Its more PVP focused and you can build up a stach of gear so you can get right into it -instead of running around looting bits and bobs for ages.

Day z is great though. If i had hundreds of hours to sink into a game that would be the one. I think lockdown has really helped it kick on in terms of users.
