General Videogame Thread

Dear PC gaming nerds,

whilst I’ve got a ps5 and I’ll continue to use that in the lounge on a big tv from the comfort of my sofa for platform type games, I’ve decided I also want to join the PC master race.

What would I need to build an ok gaming pc
(ie one that would last me a few years before I couldn’t run the ‘current’ games)? Or are there websites that are geared to answering such stupid questions?

Some help please with 2 things, mainly costs regarding Xbox Live Gold and Playstation Plus:

So a month ago as I was isolating & I paid £6.99 for a month of Playstaion online - mainly for golf and World of Warships. Not sure if I really got good value, the golf is so annoying, if I'm losing a match people play the full game, but if I get ahead they usually just 'go'. I can play against 'ghosts' human players who have played previous rounds and that is available without the payment and the advantage is they never give up! - its not quite the same as playing 'live', but in one way, its better.

Anyway, was thinking to renew (I usually get a card and redeem a code) but online, on my computer, the Sony website states 12 months for £49.99. However, when I use the Playstation itself, they are offering 50% off so - 12 months at £25 which seems really good value. Under that deal it states after 12 months it reverts to £49.99 automatically. What is to stop me signing up for that 12 months @ £25 and 364 days later cancelling it, to sign up for whatever new deal is available? or to get this offer do you have to commit to 24 months, the first year at half price, the second at full price? = total of £75, because I can't really justify that.

The reason ask is to do with my second question because I also have an Xbox and for some reason I just don't like paying for both PS Network and Xbox Gold at the same time, I just can't accept paying for both and the problem is, I really want to play this new Flight Simulator game. I used to enjoy Flight Simulator years ago and this one seems to be the ultimate development of it.

My PC can't manage it though - the graphics card is too old - but its just come out on the new Xbox so I started to think about that. But how complicated is it! Microsoft have really messed up here, with names I mean: Xbox One S or Xbox Series S, so similar, but one is old tech the other is new, its not easy. The pricing is weird too. Cash Convertors in Farnworth had a Xbox One S for £190 and a One Series S for £200! That seemed odd to say the least. I almost went with that, but for £50 I can get a new one, so I decided to wait. I was thinking £250 for the console £60 for the Flight Sim download code and sorted at just over £300 - much cheaper than a new gaming PC which would be nearer a grand.

BUT, Yesterday I heard about this deal: Xbox All Access: 'The Series One console + 24months Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, access to 100+ games and online multiplayer, with no upfront cost (with Klarna)'. The Xbox pass which I believe is Xbox gold and free games too is £10.99 a month, so 2 years would be £264 + £250 for machine = £514. This deal £20.99 x 24 = £504 is ten pound cheaper....and no big expenditure right now. This seems too good to be true, am I missing something? (plus what the heck is Klarna)?

My other worry: the guys in Cash Converters did warn me that this Series One Xbox has (only) 500 Gb space and these new games will soon fill that, assuming I get Flight Simulator, would that be it, or could I have a few more games too? I don't mind swapping them around as I don't play games that much in the football season, but I'd like to fit 4-5 games on it, at least.

P.S. Finally, I have also read that in the future Flight Simulator may be able to be played on the old Xbox over some sort of streaming service and I do have a good internet speed, should I just wait for that?

Sorry for the long post, its just so confusing right now.
I’d go with the Xbox series S on the 20.99 a month deal. (I did it the other day).
you actually get nearer 200 games with it as well including a huge EA sports catalogue as well as a load of Bethesda games (fallout etc).
I’ve been playing Flight Sim constantly. It is a truly epic game and surprisingly easy to use with a controller. It is just over 100gb in size.
The 500fb Hard drive is o to really 360gb of usable space so fills up quickly however only true series S games NEED to be installed on it. Other games not optimised for the Series S can be installed onto a usb hard drive. I had a 1tb one in my car so I’m using that leaving the console hard drive for the Xbox series S games.
I’ve got flight sim, fifa 21, and Forza horizons 4 on my HD (with about 100gb left to use) and a load of other games on the other hard drive.
for info a 1tb hard drive can be found for way less than £100.
Klarna is a Scandinavian bank who specialise in offering interest free methods of payment. I’ve used them for all sorts of stuff and they’re great.
I say go for it , I did and I’m happy.

There's really no need to build your own, you can buy them pre built from sites like ebay or ebuyer. Also depends on your budget £1500 to £2000 will get you a good rig that'll last you a good 5-6 years.
I got mine of ebay, new, about 5 years ago, it's got a gtx 980ti card in it, that at the time was the best.cost me about 1500 quid, not included monitor, keyboard all that stuff. Still runs new games like red dead.

My Asus gaming laptop has started to give issues after 3 years. Getting very hot and the keys will randomly stick or not work. Bit miffed as, although I know technology moves on, three years for a laptop is nothing.

Restart the laptop and it works fine again for a minute, then different keys will give issues.

Back to tower PC for me next, maybe next year if I save now.

Thank you, I am hoping to sort this next week, certainly before the wintertime. Thanks to all who have advised me. It just seems to good to be true, for example: Flight Simulator to buy is £60 - like 1/4 the price of the console! yet it is on GamePass along with a multitude of other games - quite odd really that they are doing this. I think Xbox are trying to be Netflix for games - suck you in and make money over the longterm.

That’s it. Snag is that some content will only be on temporarily. The first party microsoft titles should be on there indefinitely, just like netflix original content.

Ok. So my laptop was only ever used to write reports and actually work on.

If I wanted to run some games on it (Total War, the new Age of Empires etc), what’s currently letting me down:

Forget the S get the X for an extra £8 a month it’s bigger storage and more powerful if you have a 4k tv it will look great, if you can get one. Also in regard PS+ make sure you cancel auto renew them bastards will take money off you and you can get it much cheaper than £49 skis every time you renew Ps+ they sneakily reactivate auto renew. I switched to Xbox this generation from PlayStation purely for Gamepass it’s worth it and there are ways to get it cheaper than £10 a month
