General Videogame Thread

The lite one is handheld only, so no TV adapter, personally we enjoy the odd family game of Mario kart / Mario party (4 player) on the TV during the cold miserable winter months, so I'd go for the standard Nintendo switch. I wouldn't bother with the OLED one if it's her first one, it's a nicer screen in handheld mode but costs £60 more. I would put that £60 towards an extra controller to get you up to 4 controller multiplayer.

@gaz76

Two things the OLED has that the original doesn't and not mentioned here, are built in Bluetooth connectivity (for external headphones/speakers) and built in ethernet connection on the docking Station.

Relatively minor things, you can always use 3rd party adapters (not necessarily specifically made for switch) to add these functions.

Worth checking out the Nintendo eshop for salesof digital games, unfortunately Nintendo deliberately keeps stock scarce so prices of second hand games tends to be about the same as brand new.

If it is a gift I wouldn't buy second hand unless you have a rock solid warranty. I'd avoid CEX as they take things apart and repair them and will swap in 3rd party power cables etc without reducing price or informing you.

Worth paying extra £25-30 getting it new from a supermarket/argos or Amazon for peace of mind.

Tried horizon zero dawn today and after so long on elden ring it just felt very ordinary. Got great reviews but feels very dated and not sure I’ll last long with it. Really on a gaming drought at the moment, nothing I’ve played recently grabs my attention at all.

I never got into Horizon Zero Dawn at all, never got the hype for it. Similar in terms of drought, to be expected after the pandemic I guess

AFAIK she doesn't even know that game exists, she plays Minecraft and roboblox on her ipad.

I also thought about getting my daughter a switch because her friends all play animal crossing but she already owns an ipad with roblox so I decided not to.

Considering getting my daughter a Nintendo switch for her birthday, as I know shite all about these things, does anyone have any advice on what to go for?
Is the switch lite just a crap one? Is the oled much different to the normal one? Are they any good when plugged into the telly?
Should I buy new or are second hand ones ok?

Thanks in advance
8 year old son got the OLED version from 'santa' last christmas. I think it was worth the extra few quid for the OLED, I think the screen is bigger for handheld and looks sharper by all accounts. The transition from handheld to tv is excellent, just dock it and it instantly comes up on tv.
In truth he didnt play much with it, until I bought him Zelda Breath Of The Wild at the begining of summer. He has been playing it flat out for 3 months and just finished it. Mainly on tv. Best game hes played so its a must buy game. Zelda 2 is out next spring.
Think Animal Crossing and Mario (Odyssey?) are the other two popular games. Luigis Mansion is also popular.

Cheers mate, I'm leaning more to getting the oled one
