General Videogame Thread

Finally getting around to playing The Last of Us. Got the second on the shelf ready to go as soon as I've completed it.

Trying to get them both done before the TV series comes out so I can be one of those people who complain that it's not as good as the books games.
Last of Us 1 is without a doubt a top ten game of all time for me. Maybe top 5.

Yeah the first one was off the scale. Amazing game but as you say the second one was nowhere near as good.

As soon as a certain someone dies at the start it sort of ruined it for me.
And I hated playing as the girl that did it. Didn’t feel right after what she had done.

Was very very dark.
So true, the second was a huge let down for me, the characters were terrible

Well I went and pre ordered return to monkey island. Should be released to install by tea time.

It's got a low barrier to vault though, with my only other two pre orders in the last 10-15 years being final fantasy xiii and cyberpunk 2077.

Oh, and happy international talk like a pirate day me hearties!

What makes monkey island so good? Never played one but people seem to have it up there with any other games.

For the time, the original had fantastic pixelated graphics, funny logic to solve puzzles and a great story and dialogue. It's created a cult following because of the memories, characters and in-jokes.

I certainly remember spending days as a kid trying to figure out where to use a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle, or the correct sword fighting insult response to 'the last struggle I was in ended up with blood all over my face' (well I hope now you've learned to stop picking your nose!). It's not just about completing the game, often using the wrong items or speech options results in funny quips from the characters.

They remade the first two a few years back with faithfully updated graphics and full voice acting.

The third was a departure after the original creator left and met with some resistance, especially as it moves to a more cartoony art style, but now is regardless as being as good as the first two.

The fourth and fifth not so much , but probably for fans of the series only.

The latest, Return to Monkey Island, marks the return of creator Ron Gilbert for the first time since the original two games. Again it's switched art style and some have an issue with that, but the writing and comedy will be top notch I am sure.

You can pick up the first two games remastered for a couple of quid sometimes, would highly recommend giving it a try, or checking out a playthrough on YouTube for a flavour of the humour.

The first two (The Secret Of Monkey Island and LeChuck's Revenge) are considered two of the best games ever made. Some would say  the best games ever made.

Hard to explain why but you have to play them to see for yourself. A few factors:
  • The humour and dialogue are of a hugely high standard. People still routinely reference the jokes nowadays.
  • The atmosphere is brilliant - it totally draws you in.
  • It broke a lot of ground and it broke a lot of the rules of gameplay, especially in the way the focus is on the fun so, for example, there are no dead-ends and you cannot die.
As I say, you just have to play them.

It did sadly go downhill after the first two as the original creator - Ron Gilbert - didn't make them from 3 onwards. But he has now made the third proper game in the series after 30+ years and people are rightly very excited!
