What makes monkey island so good? Never played one but people seem to have it up there with any other games.
For the time, the original had fantastic pixelated graphics, funny logic to solve puzzles and a great story and dialogue. It's created a cult following because of the memories, characters and in-jokes.
I certainly remember spending days as a kid trying to figure out where to use a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle, or the correct sword fighting insult response to 'the last struggle I was in ended up with blood all over my face' (well I hope now you've learned to stop picking your nose!). It's not just about completing the game, often using the wrong items or speech options results in funny quips from the characters.
They remade the first two a few years back with faithfully updated graphics and full voice acting.
The third was a departure after the original creator left and met with some resistance, especially as it moves to a more cartoony art style, but now is regardless as being as good as the first two.
The fourth and fifth not so much , but probably for fans of the series only.
The latest, Return to Monkey Island, marks the return of creator Ron Gilbert for the first time since the original two games. Again it's switched art style and some have an issue with that, but the writing and comedy will be top notch I am sure.
You can pick up the first two games remastered for a couple of quid sometimes, would highly recommend giving it a try, or checking out a playthrough on YouTube for a flavour of the humour.
