General Wrestling Thread

We've had these discussion about wrestling on this thread before, and in my experience it's something that you either "get" and love or "don't get" and are puzzled by. Most wrestling fans will tell that that wrestling is quite often terrible to the point of embarrassment, but when it's good it's great beyond any movie, book, game or TV show.

The biggest barrier to overcome is something that Max Landis has pointed out before; many don't really get that WWE RAW is a TV show about a wrestling show and not actually a wrestling show. In the same way that The Muppet Show was a TV show about them putting on a TV show so it allowed them to have all the backstage stuff but then also the "reality" of the show that they were putting on.

Though it's covered by ESPN and seen as part of the sports genre.

It's strange at how the fanbase is so different from other TV shows. It crosses both genders, all incomes and educational boundaries, all age groups and sexualities. The people who do these studies for US TV companies suggest that it has the broadest fanbase of any show and the fact that WWE is almost always one of if not THE highest rated show on the entirety of cable in the US. Just looking now and the Nielsen ratings for US cable show that out of the top 10 ratings by hour, WWE occupies 3 of the 10. This past Monday alone which isn't a very good time for WWE in terms of critical acclaim, it beat Better Call Saul, American Dad, Robot Chicken and Family Guy.

The way people who don't watch the show view it is a bit weird to people who do. You should watch the video

The rags have 659 million fans, still doesn't detract from the fact that they're a pack of fucking cunts...

There's a lot of things that are popular that are shit. I don't really think that argument holds when it comes to a subjective opinion about the value of a product.

Its a bit shit to keep bringing back the old wrestlers to sell the PPV time and time again. Undertaker and Sting come on really whats the point. I like Bray hes going down. All you can hope is that it isnt a total burial of Bray. A win by DQ wouldnt be bad result for Bray if he lost.

The main event looks shit a real stinker. Brocks a beast but Reigns isnt ready for the run with the belt but he will win the title wrongly. Its building for the future granted but putting the belt on the wrong guy.

I am happy Cena is out of the main event makes the mid order stronger having Cena there and Bryan but they wont be there for long in my opinion. Cena will win and win easy be a walk over for him. Super Cena returns. There has to be a big heel turn on the main event.

I am pissed there isnt any next matches on it. Its on for 4 hours give or take you could of had 2 next matches on there and it wouldnt of been a lot of filler involving next.

Pure and simple, wrestling has had its day. Growing up in the late 90's and early 2000 means I was spoilt watching wrestling. I can only just about watch main events, buts that's about it.

Wrestling wasn't at its peak in the late 90s and people have been saying this about it since the 1910s.

Also to leighton, wrestling supercards have always had a legends match or two. It isn't in the Main Event and the point is to draw as big as possible so I don't see the issue.

Just think you need to build up the younger talent more. So Sting v HHH will take the guts of 30 to 40 minutes then Taker v Bray be around the same time if Taker is able for it. thats over a hour for 3 legends to fight. Granted theres a time and place for them but on the biggest PPV. I think with NXT the way it has been the best wrestling show in my opinion they should of had a match from Next on this PPV. In a ideal world it would of had 2 the Next title and a ladder match with a contract to the main roster as a win to showcase the talent at Next.

The reason they keep relying on talent from yesteryear is because for some reason most of the new faces lack that certain aura that the older guys had. Many of them are athletic and technically good, but just don't have the star presence of the old stars and are boring to watch. It's why they still rely on John Cena and have never turned him heel, because he still sells shirts and they haven't found anyone who can make more money than him yet (and I find him dull too). Supporting act wrestlers of the past like Rick Rude and Roddy Piper had more charisma and the ability to engage fans than the likes of Reigns and Rollins. Maybe it comes down to the training system and booking... the wrestlers don't seem to have much freedom and everything seems so safe. Someone like Bray Wyatt (the only one who has stood out as unique in a long time IMO) in the Attitude Era would have been a big draw. It's just so boring now and WWE posted Q3 and Q4 losses so despite their consistent TV ratings, the product seems to be suffering a bit.

Steen's out though, there's no champ to defend the NXT title...

Rollins is good, I think they have to make a stir and have him cash-in, win or lose, on sunday, to really promote him. I think they need to also do a background build with Ambrose, have him feud with Bryan for the IC title or something like that, and twist his gimmick slightly from "unhinged" to "on the people's side but in a manic kind of manner", and I think they should build him up to win the Rumble next year, and have a Shield triple threat showdown at Mania which he wins, to get him over whilst Rollins and Reigns trade the belt for a while in the meantime, as they're ahead on the development curve imo.

I think the guys have talent, there just isn't enough reasoning to stuff anymore, and I'm not talking about Reigns being pushed etc., just in terms of, like Jim Ross always says, why's this guy fighting that guy, and what's unique about these guys that makes them clash, but more importantly, makes you care about the result. The IC Title and Battle Royal on Sunday are the perfect example, whilst Paige/AJ should be culminating a year long feud, but instead are bickering about and then fighting the Bellas, who are only there because of who they sleep with, imo.

They struggle to create new stars.

Always bringing back Austin, The Rock.. why is the issue.

All supercards have legends matches as an added attraction. It's the three ring circus effect.

WWE have made Rollins, Ambrose, Reigns, Bryan, Ziggler, Wyatt, Barrett, Cesaro, Mizdow, Paige, Emma, AJ, and Rusev in the last 5 years.

That "can't create new stars" shtick is another cliche wrestling fans use that isn't really accurate
