Generation rent

Who’d live in town now? It’s a pigsty.

I had a few friends living around the Northern Quarter or Princess Street. The flats were shoeboxes without much natural light.

You could’ve got so much more for your money in Failsworth and been part of a community too.

Agree I’d not want to be in central Manchester (or north Manchester too for that matter) but a lot of younger folk do.

I expect to buy in Cardiff but I look everywhere and there’s flats in Blackley or Middleton for £70,000. Can’t people raise that on a £20K p/a salary? Two of you earning that and you’ve got more to play with.

Learn to cook. Fuck Sky off. Don’t use taxis.

Tell that to the yoof of today, it'd be a virus in the morning....

I’ve always taken lodgers in when I’m able to as I know how difficult it is to find a home. Everybody I know in communal shares has had problems from food or post theft through to antisocial behaviour. Heard some awful stories. Landlords don’t appear to give a shit either. They just want their rent.

When I sell my London place, I’ll cash buy elsewhere and rent a room out for little more than company if I’m still on my own. It’s £365,000 for a two bed terrace in London. Can you Adam and Eve that?

Maybe in some of the outer boroughs - Havering, Redbridge, Croydon perhaps. But you could probably double that in Islington, Hackney, Camden.

2 bed terrace in Brighton is up around £400k, and more in some areas.

Newham prices. I’m finding places in Wales for £50,000 but there’s clearly going to be no work.

It’s not hard getting on the property ladder if you want it enough

It depends where you live. A single person in London has zero chance if earning an average salary. As a family, we bought my late Great Uncle’s place for a fair price and it’s now sky rocketed in value. We were lucky.

In Manchester, I worked my ass off for a year in temp jobs and nobody would give me the chance I wanted. Getting anything permanent was a nightmare. So competitive. No solid income = no mortgage.

Yeah but you don’t have to live in London. My lad has a house, average income, girlfriend part time work, two kids. A lot of his mates don’t because there priorities are different. My only concern is pension poverty a lot will have to rely on inheritance.

It seems to me a lot of the younger generation want everything at the same time, house ,fancy car going out every weekend dropping a few hundred quid a time. I live in oldham yep I know a shit hole, however you can pick a terrace up hollinwood, Failsworth and even royton for anywhere between £80-130k, rent from £500-700, damn my old 4 bedroom (new build 12years ago) rents for £700 and 10 mins walk to the tram. If you are paying £1000+ for rent you need your head feeling. Go further out suck it up for a few years get a shitter car instead of blowing on a lease Audi or Merc.
In a few years you could’ve saved up a decent wedge to then get maybe near an area you want, it doesn’t help all the property investors buying up stuff but the size of the flats in the city centre and the price to be perfectly honest you need your head feeling to buy one anyway.

Just a word of warning to all those thinking they can rent and live it up whilst waiting for mummy and dad to shuffle off leaving behind a tasty inheritance. Care home fees run at £500+ a week and they will take it from your parents savings and house sale.
