Ad to this that Sherrifs are still elected by the community and not necessarily elected for their policing prowess.
this is something I always found very bizzare with the states.

Steve Kerr (expected) and Gregg Popovich savaged Trump today.
I don't pretend to be able to understand why anyone of Hispanic heritage would want to vote Trump.
I can imagine. The US is an incredible country. Intoxicating in many ways. I’ve been to San Francisco a couple of times and fell in love with the place. The country can dwarf you like no other though. Everything is bigger, louder, brasher. Always a tinge of menace in the air.
I was staying in Oakland (itself a pretty dangerous city) for a couple of weeks with distant family friends before jumping in a youth hostel/backpackers hotel in San Francisco 2 weeks later. Had a late one in Northbeach and inadvertently got locked out the house so had to sleep in a park with n Oakland one night.
Always a local murder on the news every night.
Felt like I could live there forever but then it I thought it would drive me mad
You can also chuck in gated communities with armed civilian guards who are first response. Police second.this is something I always found very bizzare with the states.

In all honesty, I think US measures incredibly poorly in a lot of the metrics that truly matter - healthcare, education, gun culture, equal treatment etc, but it's wonderful in a million other ways, food, entertainment, general vibe, etc, hence why for a European like me, it's a perfect place to visit on holiday but it would take a lot of convincing to get me to live there.

each state is so different though
It kind of surprises me that people think America should be more like England than it is. As people have said there are huge differences between areas within the country let alone Europe. The people here don’t want to be like England and really don’t give a shit how they’re viewed. It’s still evolving, who knows where we’ll be in 50 yearsIn all honesty, I think US measures incredibly poorly in a lot of the metrics that truly matter - healthcare, education, gun culture, equal treatment etc, but it's wonderful in a million other ways, food, entertainment, general vibe, etc, hence why for a European like me, it's a perfect place to visit on holiday but it would take a lot of convincing to get me to live there.
We're a tolerable country to the extent a terrorist blows up kids and we light candles singing "Don't look back in anger" or 7yr old Emily Jones who was stabbed in the neck by a somalian woman and nothing, no uproar. It kind of surprises me that people think America should be more like England than it is. Florida might as well be a different country. You can also chuck in gated communities with armed civilian guards who are first response. Police second.
Probably no chance.I'm wondering how close the action of invoking the 25th amendment is...??
They may not give a shit about how they're viewed, but the progressive position on things like healthcare and education are still, on average, hugely popular policy ideas, despite your mainstream media treating them as if they're crazy, fringe ideas. You don't lose your identity, as an example, if you stop your citizens becoming bankrupt, selling everything they own, because a loved one got cancer. America can keep being America and still create a better society for it's citizens.
