And all this because we threw a statue in the River Avon. That one act has been the single, biggest teaching moment on the history of slavery and our role in it.

It has also launched the most intensive internet search ever for ‘incidents of slavery where the British cannot be blamed’.

Can’t wait until we get a detailed history of the Aztecs.
It wasn’t this recent incident that lead to me looking this up recently, it was a knowledge gained from a documentary series that I watched a couple of years ago called Africa’s Great Civilisations by Henry Louis Gates Jr.

People are suddenly experts in spelling mesopotamia and knowing what it was

Back on topic NYPD police union tweeted this last night.

People wonder why they are getting caught up in Seattles isues and hinting at civil war/revolution.

They also threatening to sue any protester they arrest

All the local council would need to do is turn off the water and electricity. Within a couple of days most residents would be wanting to get out, a few would last a few weeks and then give in.

Shapiro is one of the biggest right wing fruitcakes out there. But its ok for him is it.

Like I said you are a hypocrite if you defend Shapiro

As I’ve said, I don’t necessarily agree with him but calling your opposition fruitcakes isn’t constructive.

Shapiro has totally differing views to you, he’s a staunch Libertarian but he’s not anymore of an extremist than you are and his politics aren’t based on identity (racism etc.) either.

I like listening to Noam Chomsky, as well as anyone on the right, it’s healthy.

There is a long list of Confederate statues that are to be removed, including Robert E Lee.

Surprisingly though Bedford Forrest is not amongst them. Bedford was a ****, the statue was designed by a white supremacist and not erected until 1998.

Some of the others are on the list like Jefferson, I am surprised by Lee though.

Thomas Jefferson?

Should the Abraham Lincoln statue in Town also be taken down?

Seen as important in the end of slavery in the US, but his treatment of the Native Americans was abhorrent.

He ordered massacres on Native Americans and organised the removal of Native Americans from their lands onto reservations.

I think it’s wrong to characterise our role in slavery as being an entirely malign one, as your post appears to be suggesting. In relative terms, during the 19th century, our deeds and actions were broadly positive and proactive.

‘suggesting’ doing a lot of work there given ‘our role’ can either mean for good or bad :)

But if I’m being honest in my head it was meant as a negative. Positive actions shouldn’t be overlooked.

Women called in LBC to Nick Ferrari going mad at him for not understanding her as a African Caribbean women - Ferrari explained the talking point is about the removal of the statue of Robert Baden-Powell and do you think it should be removed, her reply 'stop talking over me! yes, it should come down!' ... Ferrari 'and what did he do that makes you want his statue removed ? ' ... ''well i haven't read his history'

Sounds about right.

and contrary to popular opinion he wasn't against slavery. It suited his purpose at the time that's all.
