George Floyd murder / Derek Chauvin guilty of murder

I gave a reason why more funding would help in this instance.

Complaining about the 2A is just a waste of time. Have to deal with reality as it is.

Martial arts training doesn't stop bullets, in this case it might of helped but in many cases it doesn't and can't. Case in point is the guy from the weekend in LA who walked over to a police car and shot two police officers.

I'd argue to protect police funding (lack of funding is a major failing in the UK) but I really can't see what increasing funding does for anyone in these situations.

This kind of thing calls for dealing with the root of the problem which either means having police officers sat in tanks in bullet proof vests and army gear just to protect them... or why not just ban the guns...?

I know this will never happen in the US but then no-one should be surprised when the criminals win every now and then because that's the consequence of a country that legalises assault rifles but not kinder eggs.

This is where the injustice has been perpetrated and perpetuated over the decades. Its been assumed that "firing " cops is justice. In this case only one cop has been fired two others are on "administrative duties". When that has proved to be not enough they revert to money - and this is a big sum but is it worth a life? As long as the American legal system doesn't get that justice is an investigation, charges where appropriate and convictions where appropriate then it will always be seen that a badge is indeed a shield behind which cops can hide when they kill someone - whatever their colour.

As a by product of the settlement, some of the requirements developed will be an 'early warning system to flag officers with disciplinary problems'...

Does this make any sense...???

Yes....and no. Looks like there is an intention to pay more attention to officer behaviour particularly in relation to disciplinary issues - the no bit come in as I see loads of stuff reported after fatal shootings in the States where the cop in question has an appalling record of complaints made against them, previous acts of violence both in the job and at home and previous suspensions an/or referral to anger management classes so I am not entirely sure what makes the proposed commitment any different to whats in force now tbh.

But the stupidity of the yes is superseded by the logic of no.

A department should know the record of its officers at home and in the job and adjust the officer's detail accordingly; promotion, desk, streets or fired.

Simple.

Another reason qualified immunity needs looking at. The taxpayer shouldn't have to fund such a payout

To be fair in any jurisdiction its the same - local councils and the NHS pay out billions every year to successful claimants. The way around it I suppose is to fix pot holes in a timely fashion or employ competent surgeons or employ better Police officers and train them better - its often the case that the upfront spend for all these things is less than the back loaded compensation claims the taxpayer funded organisation has to pay out.
