george galloway

I have a problem with any MP who uses his position to push his own agenda whilst totally ignoring the wishes of constituents. Yep, we all know politicians are guilty of this to a certain extent. but his comments regarding denial of all Israeli's to Bradford is simply insulting to the majority of UK citizens. We're not Israel, and Bradford isn't Palestine. If Galloway's prepared to do this as a local MP could you imagine how he'd act as PM?

We're still perceived by many as a tolerant nation (believe it or not) - something which Galloway would destroy in an instant. It's not good enough for politicians to just show that they can speak their mind and not be a party puppet. Contempt towards the current establishment also doesn't make a good politician. Politicians need to show that their intentions are primarily towards the benefit of the UK. Galloway's passion regarding activities in other countries far outweighs any loyalty he has towards UK citizens, and for that reason it's a big 'No' from me.

Because we need more MPs who are happy to stick two fingers up to the establishment, rather than anodyne, wanker career politicians getting sucked in by the Westminster machine, who make up 95% of politicians today.

I fundamentally believe that the way MPs vote should be extraneous to their career advancement as much as possible. Someone like George Galloway represents that concept much better than 95% of MPs.

He's a difficult, obdurate character with a strong personality and there are many question marks surrounding him, but if parliament had a few more iconoclasts like him, our democracy would be more vibrant and more, well, democratic.

You're not going to get what I'm looking for from people who aren't, to a significant extent, flawed. I see that as a necessary evil to try and achieve what I aspire to, for those who purport to represent us.
I fully agree with you about the fact we have far too many lookalike, soundalike politicians that make up the lobby fodder for the main parties these days.

But the point I made ealrier was that you can be an independent thinker without being a bit of a twat. I can highly recommend Chris Mullin's three volume memoirs. He was, of course, the champion of the Birmingham Six and was quite left wing and independent of the party machine. But he was a self-effacing character who was filled with doubt and didn't conform to a stereotype. Often these sort of people get roped into junior ministerial appointments to keep them docile but he could never quite decide whether to be inside the tent and maybe achieve a little or outside it, free to speak his mind but essentially powerless.

Also, watching the recent Inside Parliament series on BBC2, there was a Conservative MP, Robert Halfon, who wasn't afraid to be a thorn in the side of his party machine and stand up for what he thought was right. Have you heard of him though? The major problem I have with Galloway is that he is paid by the broadcasting arms of two countries, Iran & Russia, with whom you wouldn't normally epxect to see him in sympathy with.
Where are these Mullins and Halfrons coming from these days? The party machines are so sophisticated these days that anyone with any recalcitrant tendencies simply doesn't get a safe seat anymore. Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Halfon was elected in 2010 so people like him (and there are probably more than you think) still get elected. The difference between them and Galloway is that they're not primarily self-promoting.

Apart from the fact I dislike hie public persona and disagree with his politics, his subtle shifting of position when things get a little uncomfortable lead me to believe that he's far from a "conviction politician".

Somebody once said that you should work for the cause, not the applause.. I believe he's an applause guy who's sole intention is to serve and promote himself......

CBB anyone............

I loved it when he had a show on Talksport because he was hopeless at debate.

Anyone caller who disagreed with him and made their point well was usually cut off and then he made snide comments about them.

I tuned in to RT when he got a show there so I could enjoy more of this amateurish rudeness, but on there he only seems to have discussions with people who agree with his crackpot ideas.

There's not nearly enough of them.

Scum bag...

“You are a big loser, then, and the kind of way you have embarked on this campaign will make you a big loser again. You have only a passing acquaintance with the truth. You claimed, and gullible journalists believed you, that you were subject to a forced marriage at the age of 15. But you were not 15. You were 16-and-a-half.”

So it's ok that she was forced to be married at 16 and a half? The man is despicable and hates women, probably to attract Pakistani voters.

He is not just anti Zionist he is Anti-Semetic, what he says and who he hangs about with suggests this strongly. Galloway suggesting he is Anti Zionist is just a weak excuse, the way he talks to Jews and addresses them is a disgrace. You may hate a country's state and that's fine but to hate there people is a different matter.

I am anti Putin but I don't have any hatred for Russians.
