A reserve who never played for the first team, I think. Gary Bennett also never made it to our first 11 but had a long career with Sunderland among others

Err....Gary Bennett was Dave Bennett's brother, mate. Don't think he was blond, to be honest.....
Are you thinking of Gary Buckley, by any chance?

i think there were to gary bennetts

just had a look, no sign perhaps i was wrong i will have to delve further

I'm sure your right, there was a young kid who played for the youth, not
sure if he ever got to reserves.
Used to see him at concerts, liked a drink, think he got booted out.

No, I think there were two Dave Bennets, not Garys. One black, one white. I think they used their middle initials to differentiate them, or Dave and David.
I have a vague memory of the 'other' Dave Bennett being a defender and playing for Norwich for some reason
EDIT:
Found this:

And this

Player's name: David BENNETT
Clubs played for: Manchester City, Norwich City (1976-1984).
Biography: Never played a game for City prior to his move South. Knee inuries forced him to quit at the age of 25 after an insurance pay out, last heard of running in San Antonia, Ibizia running a bar called Confusion.

Yes, the white Dave Bennett was always referred to as David P Bennett in the youth team IIRC.

There weren't 2 Gary Bennets but there were 2 David Bennetts at the same time in the late 70's - I think the white one ended up at Norwich and then oblivion

FORMER Bristol City star Shaun Goater is set to make an emotional return to Ashton Gate next month.
Now 42 and living in his native Bermuda, the striker has agreed to return to Bristol to play in a testimonial match for Robins legend Gerry Gow on Saturday, July 28.
Goater will feature for both sides when a Bristol City XI take on a Manchester City Legends select in a game designed to raise funds for Gow, who made 375 appearances for the Robins between 1969 and 1981.
Like Gow, Goater represented both clubs with distinction during a career that spanned two decades, making him an obvious target for match organisers.
Bristol businessman and City fan Chris Bradfield is acting as chairman of Gow's testimonial committee and is responsible for persuading Goater to return to Ashton Gate to play for the first time since he left the club to join Manchester City in a deal worth £400,000 in 1998.
Bradfield said: "I came up with the idea about five weeks ago. Because Shaun played for both Bristol City and Manchester City, he was an obvious choice.
"I contacted his book agent, Mark Georgevic, and he gave me a number for Shaun in Bermuda. I called him up and he said he was happy to play.
"I've paid for his flights and will pick him up at Gatwick Airport and drive him to Bristol the day before the game.
"Shaun is really positive about it and looking forward to the game and catching up with old friends. He is a lovely guy and a really important part of Gerry Gow's testimonial celebrations."
So popular was Goater with fans of both clubs that hundreds of Manchester City and Bristol City supporters travelled to Southend United to see the Bermudan international make his final appearance in English football for the Shrimpers at the end of the 2005-06 season.
Darius 'Jacki' Dziekanowski and Brian Tinnion have agreed to play in the Bristol City legends side, while Peter Beagrie and Asa Hartford are among those who have promised to turn out for Manchester City.
Tickets for the match itself are on sale now, with seats being sold in the Williams Stand primarily. Tickets are priced at £8 for adults and £4 concessions. Call 0117 963 0600 to book or buy online.

The other (white) Dave Bennett was from Ashton. Went to Ashton Grammar school where he was always a forward. Played for our youth team, then went on to Norwich. Never did very much, although he did once score at Anfield in a televised MOTD Norwich defeat.
