I went to South America in March and needed to get from Santiago, Chile to Rio de Janeiro. Cheapest one way flight was £400+ but a return was £120 so booked that and just didn't use the return journey.
As long as you don't do it frequently with the same airline then there shouldn't be a problem.
I think its common place in America and they call it 'throw-away ticketing'.
