Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

I always try to just defer judgement on transfers until they've been here a year and assume Pep and co. know best but this transfer feels so left field.

We clearly invested in Trafford as a future no.1. GK is not like any other position, he can't get good enough to take over just by playing cup games. Bringing him in with Ederson or Ortega around for a year or 2 to take pressure off made tons of sense, bringing in Donnarumma completely upends that plan which was seemingly made a few months ago.

That's before you even take into account the fact Donnarumma will not accept missing CL games, he's a massive drama queen, and despite being an exceptional shot-stopper, he's not particularly good with his feet (Hence why Luis Enrique wants rid) and he's not the best in the air either despite being massive.

It looks like we're changing plans on the fly and setting ourselves up for drama, because Trafford would be well within his rights to ask to leave if he was brought in to be #1 (the club's plans for GK would surely have been part of the discussions when he was signed) and ends up behind a 26 year old mega-signing on 300k/week.

Consider also the prospect that Trafford and Donnarumma compete on a level playing field and Trafford is better - not impossible given his better footwork, familiarity with English football and obvious potential - then we're stuck with an unsellable backup keeper on huge wages who's causing drama because he's not in the team.

It’s a bit of a strange one. Assume the fee for Donnarumma will be low (I read PSG want 50m but reckon it will be more like 25m); perhaps City accept it might not work out and due to the low fee we will take that gamble knowing they could flip him to Saudi in 12/18 months. No idea really but that’s the only rational reasoning I can think of.

When the Trafford rumours started we got an influx of stats about Traffords save percentages (in a lower league) compared to Edersons and then comments on how Edersons compared to the rest of the league (ignoring the very obvious flaws in that comparison) I've not seen any similar stat posts for Donnarumma who has a lower save percentage than Ederson last season and of course by default, Trafford.

He also sits way down on the expected saves to goals conceded ratio, opta have him down as conceding 3.6 goals more than was expected in the league last season whereas Ederson was the second best in our league conceding 4.2 goals fewer than expected. Thats a hefty swing and not at all in line with the general opinion here on Donnarummas supposed superiority.

Donnarumma is definitely a better shot stopped than Ederson. And I say that as someone who loves Ederson and doesn't want to sign Donnarumma.

I get what you're saying about people picking and choosing when stats are important but it's the one thing he's far better than Ederson at.

Yeah and that's an unknowable for us fans right now, but given Trafford had the choice between 2 CL clubs in City and Newcastle (where he'd be starting ahead of 33 year old Pope who isn't the player he used to be) and he wants to be England #1 with a world cup next year it's very hard to imagine he'd have signed up to being a backup for the forseeable future (5+ years).

It also doesn't fit in with what we're hearing about the club being open to keeping Ederson.

Newcastle didnt do the fee either though did they? Maybe Trafford just wanted to come back to City and fight for the shirt, be back at the club and see how it went for a few years?

They were negotiating the fee around £31m and then we swooped in quickly and came to an agreement with Burnley easily thanks to the buyback, but from the way Newcastle journos were reporting it, they expected Trafford to get done if we'd not stepped in.

It stretches credulity to think Trafford (22, hot prospect after breaking a ton of 100 year old goalkeeping records, just broken into the England squad, multiple clubs after him) didn't care at all about whether he'd be starting or not when picking his next club.

Also while he's an academy product, he joined at 13/14 and was a Chelsea fan, so it's not like he's here fulfilling a childhood dream like Foden and Rico.

I think the moment that City learned of the break-up of Donnarumma's relationship with PSG we decided to enter into talks with Galatasaray, Donnarumma and PSG. The plan to nurture Trafford in Ederson's final season was a good one but it was superceded by a better one. I think Ederson will be happy to leave, but if we want to sign Donnarumma, we will probably have to move quickly as he will receive other offers.

Cyrano Stone said they had higher priorities than goalkeepers.

Neville and Rooney seem to be stirring the pot from their side now. I have a sneaking suspicion this may end up a Ronaldo situation... We all know the rags find money when it suits, and aren't ashamed to sack the dinner ladies and cry poverty the rest of the time.

Personally, I hope we get Donnarumma. Khaldoon always talks about adapting to situations in the market and I think this is simply too good not to act on. The downside is the potential impact on Trafford, and that's not something I'd be thrilled about. But, if its a choice between Donnarumma as number 1 and Trafford, then as of right now, its Donnarumma, by a clear margin.

We are going to see more and more corner plays where the goalie is shoved off his line, barged into- etc.
Set pieces are becoming an absolute art as so many teams who are unable to score goals otherwise are going to use every single trick to try and get a goal.

Keepers are going to have to adapt. That so many appear to be reluctant of any contact- and that the refs are allowing said contact and it results in goals, we're going to see a dumbing down of the game with keepers starting to go down to lesser and lesser contact.

And Trafford was 12.9 fewer…

I did see those stats. Now compare Donnarumma's other seasons or last season in UCL...

The Wayne Rooney Show?

Will this come with subtitles and sign language.

What the funk has this fat sausage got to say that anyone will find remotely interesting?

BBC bending over for ex rags once again.
