Gianluigi Donnarumma | Done deal according to Romano

I’m a bit surprised we’re even in for Donnarumma but only because Pep has always been obsessed with keepers who are comfortable on the ball. Even Bravo before him was picked more for what he could do with the ball than pure shot-stopping.

I would hope that the analytics dept have looked at the stats and decided the “ball-playing” advantage isn’t anywhere near as valuable as it may have been in previous years and the value is in just having someone who can pull off world-class saves week in, week out.
So yeah, on the one hand, he’s not the typical Pep keeper. On the other, he’s one of the best pure shot-stoppers on the planet. If the club think his strengths outweigh the negatives, I'm all for it.

Eddie has been a revelation and has turned our ideas on goalkeeping on their heads. But he wants to go - he nearly left last year - and all we can do is thank him the last excellent nine years. The club has to fill the hole left in the team. We could certainly do worse than James Trafford, a very talented young 'keeper. But it looks as though we will be signing Donnarumma, a keeper many rate the best shot stopper in the world but simply not good enough "with his feet" or at corners.

To read opinions on here it seems some believe we are ditching a promising "young" lad in favour of a limited old man, but in fact James is almost 23 and Donnarumma is "only" 26, still young enough to improve and be improved. Pep makes players better! The idea of two very talented 'keepers training together under Pep's watchful eye suggests we could end up with two phenomenal 'keepers - excellent shot stoppers, both big enough to dominate their area and bothe good with their feet, and both very fit to replace Eddie.

Thank fuck he hasn’t read this thread.

There’s still time for him to change his a mind. ;-)

Nail on the head.

World class saves.

For all of Eddies amazing kicking abilities he was never a great shot stopper or made what you would call many world class saves, bar the CL final against Inter. :-)

People on here, fucking embarassing, he's one of the best if not the best keeper in the world & people are moaning and suddenly are all goalkeeping experts ???
It’s a forum for opinions and discussions, not experts. I don’t find it embarrassing having an opinion, and as I said I hope I’m proved wrong (f’ing and blinding and seemingly getting as worked up as you are on the other hand would probably cause me some embarrassment!).

I’ll trust the club to get these decisions right, and over the past decade or so more often than not they have done.
