Nothing like a well constructed balanced argument...

Brilliant post, PB. I'd like to add a real-life example.

One of the things I learnt the most from early in my career was this:

When I first got into people management, at a big corporation, I'd become manager of a team. As part of a restructure I had to choose someone to be Team Leader of each of my three teams. All of the staff knew me well , and for two of the teams the choice was obvious.

But for one of the teams it was neck and neck between two people, both of whom I managed very closely and had a strong business relationship with. I made my decision, but as this was a brand new restructure of the company, the MD wanted to announce all these promotions one night at a big company get-together/jolly. I really wanted to talk to the guy who;d been overlooked and explain why - I was still giving him a title of "Senior" which he hadn't had before but he wasn't going to get the job. But I didn't, I obeyed the MD and the whole thing was annnounced to the whole company.

The guy who'd been overlooked - a damn good employee but not quite management - immedaitely left the get together in a fury. He took a week off sick then when he came back handed his notice in. He was absolutely hurt to the quick that things had been handled this way.

I learnt a lot from that. I lost a great employee through not obeying my instincts on man management. People need to be talked to, to have decisons explained clearly and as honestly as you can. That's what gets them bought into you.

not all plain sailing then the car wash business

...made me chuckle

Cheers

Familiar? Especially the parts about them not having a relationship and he being a rubbish man manager.

Also, I guess this isn't the first time Mancini has nearly come to blows with a player ;).
Fontana slams boss Mancini
Wednesday 11 May, 2005

Inter goalkeeper Alberto Fontana has launched a quite extraordinary verbal attack on Coach Roberto Mancini.

The reserve shot-stopper is set to leave the club in the summer but not before he made his feelings towards the tactician perfectly clear.

"If I hadn’t had been stopped by my teammates, I would have come to blows with him. I just can’t take it anymore," he told the QS newspaper.

"I already told him a few months ago, when he was attacking us goalkeepers about the goals we were letting in, that his Lazio side also conceded a sack full of goals.

"Therefore, maybe there was another problem that was linked with his style of play. That’s when our relationship ended, even if we never really had a relationship."

Fontana was actually promoted to the first team for a period earlier this season after Francesco Toldo’s difficulties.

But he was relegated back to the bench and is unlikely to feature again after today’s astonishing outburst.

"I was told that I had become ‘uncomfortable’ because I could create problems with my character," added the former Atalanta No 1.

"But Mancini didn’t tell me this. He hasn’t got the balls to do so even if he is paid to do such things.

"He is a spoilt child who is afraid of his own shadow and always needs help from others, notably (his assistant Fernando) Orsi.

"Mancini was a phenomenon as a player but he is worth nothing as a man.

"After all, there must have been a motive if during his playing days everybody loved Roberto Baggio whereas Mancini was hated."

The Italian added that he believed former Nerazzurri boss Hector Cuper was a much better man manager.

"Cuper on the other hand was a great, a real man," noted the player nicknamed ‘Jimmy’.

"If he asked me to be the fifth choice ‘keeper then I would. If Majorca survive relegation in La Liga then I could go and join him there."

Inter are expected to take disciplinary action against the player for giving an "unauthorised" interview.

Your obviously a fool! Anyone who says Shay Given was a shit signing is a muppet! He was better than Hart at the time and although Joe has passed him now, theres not much in it.

True, a manager doesn't need to be friends with the players but he does need to have the respect of the squad. I can't imagine players being prepared to run through the proverbial brick wall for a manager they don't have any time for at all. And that is the balancing act for any manager, I suppose because you don't get respect as a manager in any walk of life by either being too "chummy" or by being a c**t who is hated.
