This basically is a brake, without the 4 games over xmas the league would be even more fucked.
Spain, Italy, Germany only have 1 cup competion run through the season the other one is the equivalent of our charity shield and played at start of season, plus champs league and euro cup, would have to extend the season to august with a mid-winter brake!!!

If you look at an atlas and see the other countries on the same latitude as the UK they all have a much more severe winter than we traditionally have had.
the reason for this is the north atlantic drift or as others call it the gulf stream, however as the ice caps melt it cools the waters of the atlantic changing the flow of the north atlantic drift, meaning that our temperat winters will be no more and we have to get used to more severe weather in future.
