The current method of taking goal kicks by passing to defenders inside the box is fraught with danger. I have just watched the A-League game between Wellington and Auckland. In time added on Wellington's goalie really stuffed up with the distribution - result Auckland scored. And as Wellington were then chasing the game they were exposed to a counterattack which resulted in a second goal.
Goal kicks - boot it up the field preferably to one of your team but at least clear the danger areas.
FYI - I support New Zealand teams against Australian teams unless it is Melbourne City - but I don't like Auckland teams in any sport so this result doesn't sit well with me.

As a great man once said.

No fucker ever conceded a goal from Row Z.

Get that thing hoofed and let’s get back to proper football.

While I'm tempted to say welcome to modern football, but I would also say that teams need to be flexible to the game situation. If level or one up in time added on, don't take unnecessary risks. At that point in a match, I'd agree, get it down field - especially if it's a team who arent as technically capable and well drilled as City are.

Pep plays the way we did as kids when playing in unorganised games in the local park (yes, youngsters we really did that, and mostly playing in the clothes that we happened to be wearing at the time).
We never took a goal-kick as that was a 50/50 fight ball on the half-way line, we just played it out from the back.

We've been here before. When pep came, that first season, we had been playing Pep style football and it was failing (not the right players in place). We were all of the same opinion... This won't work in the PL.

By the time of the following season we had the right players in the right positions, the right keeper, we had learnt the style but most importantly grew the balls to play that style and we haven't looked back.

Opposition teams have learnt how we play but pep has evolved it beyond that anyway, but it's key to what we are.

And the best example of it at work was the goal the other night against sparta when our defenders sucked the naive opposition in, stretched their formation, then passed our way through their disorganised midfield.

That's my take on it anyway.

So Pep’s been getting it wrong all these years then?!
