Goalkeeper situation summer 25

You know this for sure?
Widely reported last summer. Widely reported we are after an experienced, international keeper (Costa).

I’d rather keep Eddie. I’m always on here defending his shot stopping and saying he’s a great keeper.

Honestly have no idea what will happen here. I wouldn't be surprised if one of, both, or neither Eddie/Ortega leave.

One pet peeve of mine is using a foreign spot on the backup keeper. So if Ortega goes I do hope we can find a HG backup keeper. It just feels like a waste to use a foreign spot on a player who realistically is only playing 10-15 (primarily) cup games a year.

For reference, ortega played 21 games this season just gone.

You make a fair point, but that's more down to Eddie having some injury issues over the past year or two and not necessarily the norm. I think the backup keeper should ideally only being playing 10-15 relatively low stake cup games, but your point is taken that would put us between a rock and a hard place if the starting GK is injured.

Would probably mean only option would be Trafford but I don’t see it

Joan Garcia for £25mil looks a good deal. Good enough with his feet/coming off his line to be a Pep player, but also has 3x as many high claims as Ederson or Costa from Porto.

Could loan him out for another year if Ederson/Ortega aren’t ready to move yet. I don’t think there’s any superstar goalkeepers who would be a massive obvious upgrade to the point they’re essential buys.

If both go then either Garcia or Costa for 1st choice
promote both spike and True to 2nd and 3rd choice

Ortega not good enough to be No 1 if we want to be challenging on all fronts
I think he stays as the 2. Knows that he’s trusted if needed to step up for what ever reason and plays in the cups.

If we bring in Garcia it’s good to have that experience.

Flekken to Leverkusen. Only club I’ve heard interested in Ortega now deciding on someone else.

I think Ortega stays

No way Trafford comes back to us to sit on the bench in the PL and only play cup games - career suicide, especially if he wants to play for England
Edit: er and he's not good enough, that's one of the reasons he left

Coming up through the red dippers academy, I doubt Caoimhín Kelleher would agree to join us but apparently Brentford think they can get him for £20m. Dippers wouldn't sell him to us either most likely.

He's association trained and would be an excellent back up here, in my opinion.

He’s leaving Liverpool for first team football. No way he’s joining us as a back up keeper.

Is Marc-André ter Stegen no longer wanted at FC Barcelona? The Spanish media are talking about a “bombshell” - a successor is said to have already been chosen.

Astonishing news about the German number one: Marc-André ter Stegen is apparently now a candidate for sale at FC Barcelona!

Club president Joan Laporta is said to have cleared the 33-year-old for sale at a board meeting. A corresponding report by the Catalan radio station RAC-1 has now been confirmed by the sports newspaper As, which spoke of a “bombshell”.

According to the report, Laporta is expecting to sign Joan García, who currently plays for LaLiga rivals Espanyol. According to Mundo Deportivo, he is available for a fixed transfer fee of 25 million euros. Transfer rumors have been circulating for days.

Barca probably planning with García
If García, who is probably also being courted by Manchester City, agrees as planned, they would “get rid of” ter Stegen, according to the As.

For a decade, the former Bundesliga star from Borussia Mönchengladbach, who recently returned from a serious injury, was untouchable. This is no longer the case, he is no longer seen as essential. Also because his level is no longer the same after three knee operations.

Wojciech Szczesny, meanwhile, is set to become the backup keeper behind the hoped-for new number one García. Barca coach Hansi Flick had opted for the Pole in the decisive games of the season finale in Spain, although ter Stegen was already available again.

Now, according to the explosive As report, the coaching team - Flick's name is not explicitly mentioned in this context - no longer believes in the German.

Ter Stegen has been the official number one goalkeeper for the German national team since the departure of Manuel Neuer. National coach Julian Nagelsmann had also committed to the long-time backup in the run-up to the Nations League final four. His big goal is the 2026 World Cup.
