lol..when i first started playing, me and the lads were out all weathers, wrapped up in winter playing with illuminous balls (ooerrr), then gradually we started getting pissed off with winter rules and winter greens, so most of us are now fair weather golfers.

one last tip; make sure you keep your balls out of the heavy rough ;p

Heaton Park is truly an assault course!

Hire a buggy if you play here :-)

Someone else mentioned Duxbury, another nice 18 hole municipal.

Out of interest, is anyone here a member at Northenden?

Another vote here for Boysnope. Nice beginners course, not too long nice wide fairways. Well looked after as well.

Stay away from Altrincham though (imho), not good.

alty is in cracking condition now they got a lottery grant a couple of years ago and got a new green keeper great course for the money.

boysnopes greens are very flat and dont take much reading but it is a good course for begginers.

I played golf a fair bit a couple of years ago but never understood why people would ever become a member of a golf course it is a waste of money each year. All for a GUI Hcap. Fuck that shit. I have always played over here in council golf courses and some are to a very high standard. My local golf course is €15 a round Monday to Friday before 10.30 in the morning and is a real test.
Apart of the course is Christy O Connor were you pay €375 to become a member of the course and on top of that you pay green fees a fucking joke as it is the same course to play good test.
Around were I live in Dublin in either direction of a 15-20 minute drive I have a choice of 10 or more golf courses.

I agree with the prices being ridiculous (my memebrship is getting on for £800 no added green fees I do get around 80 - 100 rounds a year in though so around £8 - £10 per round), but when your a member you have the option of playing competitive golf on a weekly basis, most golf courses will have a annual fixture calendar (like a tour within the club) with majors etc.

I never played Stackstown bit of a treck on the south side of the city most of the courses I play would be on the northside of the city. Great links course over here called Corballis out in Donabate lovely course around the €20 - €25 mark and for the first 9 holes you are playing alongside the seaside and on a good summer day it is a great course to play. Another monster is Deer Park up in the hills in Howth used to play out there after work on a Friday cheap as well but if you were to put a extra €10 to it you would get a free dinner always a plus after a day in work. Elmgreen also a cheap course thats a test.

The cheaper the course the better. All these pro courses are a nightmare you can never get out and if you do it costs you a arm and a leg to play them.
