and has to ask police for 400 cells

Ministers confirm they have launched the Operation Safeguard contingency plan for the first time since 2007.

Back in 2009/10, I spent 12 months at the Ministry of Justice, which covered the change of government to the Coalition after the GE. To spare myself from a withering comment from @gordondaviesmoustache, I'll not mention how I bumped into David Cameron, William Hague and Gordon Brown in the space of an hour the but I did go to a Town Hall with Ken Clarke, who was the incoming Justice Secretary.

I got chatting to the guy next to me who (iirc) was Assistant General Secretary of the Prison Officers Association at the time. He made the point that prison was a mix of punishment, protecting the public and the opportunity to try to rehabilitate offenders but it was fairly pointless sending people to prison for less than 6 months, as that wasn't enough time to do any rehabilitation.

Wonder how many places we will need if we ever tightened up our soft legal system?

I read something somewhere recently that people driving motorbikes off the road only get 22 weeks in gaol.
