Grealish left out of the CWC squad (pg34)

City faced a huge psychological barrier after losing to Real Madrid in the 2021-22 CL Semi Final (was it Grealish or Foden who hit the post immediately prior to caving-in?) and there was a real sense of now-or-never when we played them again the following season.

Not now, but in years to come, somebody will articulate Grealish's influential role in the greatest City performance I've ever witnessed

I'm not interested in debating whether he was worth the transfer fee or his relatively small number of goals and assists.
I don't even care if he was guilty of over celebrating after Istanbul

I saw City win the treble and Grealish played a significant part

People that talk up grealish's role in the treble would struggle to name a single game he was the standout difference maker in. He had a very good 8-10 weeks after January. It wasnt the entire season or even 6 months as if often claimed. His form nose dived at the very end when it really mattered, anonymous in the finals, didn't he himself admit he was shit in a post match interview?

Look on the opposite wing, Mahrez was much more pivotal in that treble, actually winning us key games yet doesn't get a tenth of the credit. Grealish will always be a treble winner and every single one of them that are will go down in history but he was a cog in that side not one of the key components some like to suggest.

I've literally just named one 30 minutes ago

I'm not disagreeing that Mahrez was criminally underrated but watch the full highlights of the CL Semi Final again and Haaland should have had a hat trick from Grealish assists in the First Half alone.

Grealish also had a direct role in both the 2nd (initial pass to Gundogan) and 3rd (bought the foul)

He was brilliant that night and Real Madrid were so scared they left gaps elsewhere

Any concrete offers yet? Appreciate what he's done here but as Claude (RIP) said "it's time to go". Massively underwhelmed overall the £100m fee was like an albatross around his neck no doubt, for that fee you expect world class ability/consistency not buying the "Pep stifled his creativity" rubbish....wasn't the case for likes of Mahrez, Ribery, Messi, Dr Bruyne etc it's a lazy excuse.

Motm when we beat Liverpool 4-1

Ifs and buts, but Jack’s role was to help stop us losing, something he and Rodri did fantastically together

Pep wanted control, he got it

This season we’ve rarely had it
Agree mate. I completely understand why lots don’t rate him as he’s not a traditional winger, but having him & Rodri playing as metronomes was mesmerising imo

The way they both completely dictated the tempo of our play was a complete joy to watch & a huge reason, along with Stones learning to play CM, why we won the treble

I think his influence on the way we played for an 18 month period is grossly underrated

You're right he was a treble winner, but the credit in his bank for being a part in that season soon dissipated. Too many blues make that excuse about Grealish, they talk as if we wouldn't have won the treble without him. That's debatable but on the whole he's not lived up to expectations.
That depends who's expectations you're taking about doesn't it?

This might sound a bit harsh, but Grealish had a good season when we won the treble but as others have said, he wasn't the reason we won it.

This season KdB has been on the slide and we needed someone to come in and run the game. Grealish hasn't taken that chance. Gundogan, Kovacic, Foden etc have all had injuries or dips in form and we needed someone to come in and step up. Grealish hasn't taken that chance either.

He's not massively impressed when he's played this season and to be honest, his game is about absolute safety and he carries no goal or assist threat. His job is to eeek out fouls and not give the ball away but it's killed his game.

He needs to move on really. He won't get in the England squad and I can't see how he fits into our side anymore and he hasn't taken any chances.

Wonder where he is going because am sure I read that he won't be going to the club World Cup, maybe he will just get an extended break

Aw man. Only going one way, isn’t it?

Shame. I’ll die on the hill of him being top 5 players in the team during the treble season. Worked his socks off (tracking back against Salah being the obvious one) but his ability to slow the play down but give an incisive pass to oncoming runners was second to none (pass to Gundo for the second goal at home to Madrid was a common occurrence all season).

Frustratingly I think he’d work an absolute treat with Reijnders who makes runs from deep. Last season we relied on our wingers to be dynamic rather than ‘clever’ which is the opposite of his strengths.

But one good season in four isn’t good enough. Pep was obsessed with getting him and has been obsessed with keeping him judging by recent comments so if he’s on his way, it’s likely for the best for everybody.

Hope when/if he leaves, we get a fee and not just a loan Kalvin Phillips style.
