Greater Manchester Politics Thread

The Tory lockdown has been a shambles since day 1.

Look at Sweden who hasn't locked down and has lower deaths per capita than us. We're led by an arrogant, lazy and inept government.

Agree its been a shambles and im against lockdown.

Many on here though have been demanding it and when it comes, its suddenly more important to support Burnham because he is telling the Tories to fuck off?

Is it fair to say we shouldn't enforce lockdowns when there's an abundance of available ventilators and emergency care on hand?

Although it's nice seeing someone call out this inept government, I do agree that sticking two fingers up isn't the point.

Clearly, we need some type of 'circuit breaker' so we don't reach April level deaths, but I just can't see the logic in the strategy the government have put forward. Lockdowns simply don't work. The number of cases rose exponentially despite the prolonged initial lockdown. I don't think we understand how the virus is spreading clearly enough to gamble livelihoods - the government's own experts disagree with the strategy!

If anything tier 3 lockdown will lead to a spike in cases as thousands of people will just go round to each other's houses as they can't visit in COVID safe spaces.

I agree completely. Half arsed, half baked lockdown that is anything but a lockdown is pointless other than to impose maximum disruption and financial pain on the majority who can least afford it. I agree we dont understand this virus yet, especially politicians who are more scared of social media criticism than they are of actually doing their fucking jobs and flip and flop making bad decision after bad decision. We cant ruin the vast majority of peoples lives by destroying the economy and jobs and seeing hundreds of thousands of cancer deaths in the near future because we effectively shut the NHS down to protect it.

Respect social distancing, wash your hands, wear your masks in all settings but life has to carry on. We have to go to work, we have to go for a doctors appointment, we have to have that 2 week screen if its suspected we have cancer, we have to shop....i could go on.

No, demand adequate financial support for those who are going to be most affected by Tier 3 restrictions before agreeing to it.

So he is playing politics. I agree about the money and we should be introducing a universal basic income to protect people and to ensure the economy keeps going ideally but if not, we should be paying 100% of peoples wages if lockdown is the way they want to go but im curious as to why those who have demanded lockdown all along are now willing to risk lives as they say not doing so will do whilst politics is played out? If it takes another week to negotiate the terms he wants and it costs lives will people blame Burnham?

I'm not really sure what is meant by the phrase "playing politics" tbh. Burnham's job is to best represent the interests of the people of Greater Manchester, which is what he is doing imo.

Looks like Lancashire have now agreed a deal, wonder if Greater Manchester will follow?

Well done Burnham. Ruining livelihoods that will likely never recover as they’ll never receive the financial support needed to do so for the sake of a half baked plan that the top advisors have said will not work is not the answer. You don’t completely ruin that many lives to essentially just give the government an extra couple of weeks to stop being incompetent. A full lockdown is the only thing that’s proven to have an impact, that’s probably going to be needed soon enough but doing anything in between in the meantime without guaranteed financial support to cover the costs is pointless and is more harmful than good.

And fuck Dominic Raab with his slimy little comments about doing what’s best for the people of Manchester, that’s exactly why he’s took this stance you fucking weasel.

So Manchester cannot have any more money to go into tier 3 but lo and behold just as London and Essex go into tier 2 the treasury announce they are going look at increasing financial support to businesses in...
Tier 2.

Is he because every days delay in locking down means people will die so who is he representing here? Lockdown has been demanded by many and now its here they dont want it seems to be the case or at least they will have it once they have negotiated a bit.

Politics is being played by everyone.

I am an advocate of independence for the NW of England and especially Manchester. I am sick of being ruled by London and think its time we fucked the south off and went our own way.

The Socialist Republic of Manchester , an official Tory free zone has a certain ring to it.
Much the same kind of ring as a lump of concrete from one of those Soviet republics - much of which still remains. Give one of those lumps a mighty thump with a lump hammer and it'll probably hit some kind of note!

YAY.......Another one for UBI.

Burnham has gone up in my estimation this last couple of days.
Andy has definitely found some more of his famous soundbites - 'Lockdown on the cheap', 'Canaries down the mine'! I thought at one point he had set fire to any old EFC shirt he had and bought into the 'victim' mentality so familiar with some parts of Dipperdom.

I don't know what point you are trying to make but it has failed spectacularly.

If anyone read the Guardian story that I won't even link that claimed GM's hospitals were at breaking point, here's the vital bit of context they left out:
