Greatest ever English team

It depends on the records. If this team gets 100 points and 104+ goals it will always be in the conversation for best premier league team.

This team is the best.

Football standards have improved immensely since 1999. That united team would not be top 6. Steve Bruce would not even be a premiership player, nor Denis Irwin.

Only one team in Premier League History has 90+ points and 90+ goals: the Utd 1999-00 team

In terms of legacy a lot rests on performance over the next 5 games.

Also strength of competition should be factored in: the PL was virtually a duopoly between 1998-2004 and standard of teams finishing 3rd to 6th was nowhere near what it is now.
Arsenal invincibles failed to beat Utd in league and lost to them In FA Cup but they were a machine vs the rest like Mourinho's first Chelsea team (lots of points from not many goals)

I think 18 consecutive wins speaks for itself - but we will need to finish strongly to have any chance of gaining wider recognition that this team deserves.

I think we’ll beat a number of those records to become one of the very best single-season PL clubs ever.

Stylistically we are defo THE best.

That will do it for me. However, we need to win a series of PLs and one or two CLa to be widely considered the greatest PL team ever.

The Utd 98/99 team isn't even the greatest Utd Premier League team. The overall achievement of the treble was brilliant but they're actual league performance over a full season was probably on par with that of Utd this season. They dropped points in 16 games and only won 2 out of 8 against the top 4 sides beneath them.

Their CL performance was great but even then they drew 7 out of their 13 games. The manner of their victories in the knockout stages of the CL certainly weren't dominant but on paper look excellent results.

You also have to factor in the league competition. The league was nowhere near as good as it is now. You basically had a top 2 plus Chelsea as a best of the rest sort of team. You could even argue that Arsenal were quite weak if you wanted to judge them on their CL performance (limped out in the group stage in a very weak group). In fact only Chelsea were the other English team not to embarrass themselves in Europe that season. Leeds and Liverpool both suffered early exits as well.

All in all, the modern era is just better. Its more technical, faster, more tactical and good players are much more evenly spread out across the league. And that is what makes this City team a better team than the United team of 98/99, even with the CL. The same can be said about the Arsenal invincibles, who dropped points in 12 games during the 38 game season and who's points tally we have very comfortably passed. The only team you could make a case for would probably be the Mourinho Chelsea team (04/05 I think).
