Greatest ever Mancunian?

Oh, Gordon Brown apologised officially, so it's all water under the bridge now.

Lloyd George was born in Manchester but bred in Wales, are we counting him or just born and bred Mancs?

Born and bred Mancs, I'll pick J. J. Thomson. He found the electron and isotopes, invented the mass spectrometer and won the Nobel Prize. Not bad for kid from the factories in Cheetham Hill. He had a kid who won the Nobel as well if I recall.

Again, probably not the most popular choice, but another guy who will be remembered long after most popular choices are dead. The electron is quite important to every piece of science to be honest.

Originally I was just thinking born and bred Mancs, but maybe the boundaries should be changed to open it up a bit. Maybe having resided in Manchester for a significant period should suffice, which would include the likes of Turing, Halle, and Rylands (as johnmc mentioned). I guess Engels would be pushing it a little.

JJ Thomson is a good shout.

Also, he was the President of the Royal Society for a bit, the same post held by Newton, Kelvin, Huxley and loads of other great men.

J J Thomson was hardly from the factorys of Cheetham Hill, unless you mean his family may have owned a few.
Great man all the same.

Adopted Mancunians: Alan Turing. He'll be remembered a million years after anybody who has even heard of anybody who has heard of Johnny Marr is dead.

Born Manc: David Lloyd George. Ok, he didn't open a decent nightclub, or sing a few songs or anything, but he did win us the First World War as PM of the country, so perhaps that counts for something?

Which, along with him overseeing the introduction of old age pensions and social insurance in the UK when Chancellor of the Exchequer, is why I nominated him. Achievements of the highest order without which this country would be markedly different and arguably a much worse place. Plus he knew my father.

Daniel Adamson was the driving force behind the creation of The Manchester Ship Canal. This opened up trade links between Manchester and the rest of the world.

According to wiki, there are plaques in Didsbury & Dukinfield and he's buried in Southern Cemetry.

Good shout, didn't know anything about Adamson until you mentioned him but have just briefly read up on him and he's a hugely significant figure in Manchester's development.

I liked this extract about T.M.S.C.

In late 1898 the Manchester City, 7,698 gross tons, became the largest vessel to reach the terminal docks. Carrying cattle and general cargo, it was met by the Lord Mayor of Manchester and a large welcoming crowd.

Joseph Whitworth, technically from Stockport but if Salford counts?

If adopted Mancunians are being allowed, the my vote goes for Turing. He laid the foundations for the technological age. He killee himself my lacing an apple with cyanide (?) And eating it. Theres an urban myth that this inspired the Apple Mac logo, but is usually dismissed. Good urban myth though.

Its a shame we dont celebrate our history more often. I mean, the world first passenger train service. Thats an acheivement!
