Greatest ever Mancunian?

Mancunians have a strong civic pride, and rightly so considering the role Manchester played in shaping the modern world. The industrial revolution and development of the first programmable computer, arguably the two most significant advances of the last 300 years, have their roots in the city.

Manchester was also the site of the world's first railway station, hosted the first meeting of the Trades Union Congress and is where scientists first split the atom.

It got me thinking about who the greatest ever Mancunian is, be it in the fields of politics, industry, academia, culture or whatever people deem important.

My knowledge of history isn't great, but off the top of my head people like Emily Pankhurst, Anthony Burgess, Lloyd George and L.S. Lowry (although technically a Salfordian I think) could be contenders. Interested to hear what other (more knowledgeable) people think?

Sadly, it was watching the latest Alan Partridge that got me thinking about it with his quest to find the best ever person from Norfolk. On Bernard Mathews: "Depending on your point of view, he's either responsible for the biggest ornathological genocide of recent times, or he is the greatest farmyard detainable strategist of the last 100 years". Quality.

Tony Warren and Tony Wilson. Both true visionaries who, in their respective fields of drama and music, brought the city of Manchester to the fore.

And before the Rag Police have a go, yeah, I know the latter was a United fan, but without him I'd have never spent the best years of my life in the Hac, getting tanked up on Red Stripe and throwing some serious shapes to Voodoo Ray...
