Agree with this. Hendrix was THE pioneer. He invented the electric guitar sound we all love and know today.The impact of hearing him back then must have been immense.....and he deserves all the credit and plaudits he gets for that.

That he is still 'up there' in discussions like this so many years after his premature death shows his lasting legacy.

However, many since have taken his ideas and took them even further, so technically at least they are better Hendrix now.

Eddie Van Halen being just one that took it to a new level back in mid 70's.....then players like Vai, Gilbert and Satriani and all the others of their ilk too....but they owe it all really to Jimi in the beginning.

Such a general question - greatest in what sense?

In terms of "shredding" and overall technique then Vai or Malmsteen for me.
