I know they are unlikely to go tits up,more's the pity,(joke,for the hard-of-thinking).
I would kinda like one of you two economic gurus to explain why Italy is in the brown stuff,as they are run by a nice right-wing crook - not like those badly-run socialist hell-holes such as Greece and Portugal.
Ancient Citizen seems to think that the evil lefties have the monopoly on fiscal mismanagement.
My point is merely that this is simplistic claptrap,and that Europes problems run deeper than mere ideological political dogma,and this dreary left/right catfight.
We need to think outside of the box.

Here's what we do, it's a well thought out plan, no Ouzo involved.

Instead of the UK contributing any cash, our Government agree to provide holidays for Brits, FOC.
OK, we have the free hOliday, now our spends.

We buy a prepaid debit card, loaded with say €1000 for £500.
Use the card to pay for food booze etc.
The cash from the card goes straight into the Greek governments coffers.
The bar owner gets his cut, when he submits an electronic invoice, no one rips off the tax system everyone's a winner!

What! A corrupt government , surely not?

The only way out of this for Greece is out of the Euro. They need to rebuild their economy on their own terms. It was clearly a mistake for them to join the Euro in the first place, and I feel the EU should rethink the policy of making new EU members join the single currency because it's clearly not for everyone.

I heard a Greek teacher being interviewed. She lives on one of the islands so is supplied by ferry. none have docked in the last ten days or so and there is no petrol. she also said that shops want cash not credit cards but that there is a shortage. Could it be that they are holding on to the euro notes as they would rocket in value if they default and leave the eurozone?
