Grenfell Tower block disaster

So when are the twats who bought the flammable cladding going to be in the dock? No doubt their lawyers have ensured that it’s the scapegoats the fire service show first before the people who are directly responsible are interrogated.

At the moment the Inquiry is being very kind to the firefighters despite the fact that some of them have admitted to not following 'procedures' like the guy who made his own way to the 20th floor on his own without breathing apparatus to attempt to rescue a young girl... total breach of everything he's been trained to do.

Sad day yesterday when the bloke was telling how it got to the point where he had to prioritise rescue attempts and started crying

I disagree mate. Surely the inquiry would be better served by looking at the causes of this fatal fire, first and how repeats can be avoided. Then the focus could have moved on to how rescue attempts could have been better.

I also find your example about “failing to follow procedure” strange since the firefighter was going beyond the call of duty to try to save a resident.

Far from going easy on the Fire Service, it is obvious that there is a lot of scapegoating going on, including the middle ranking officer who was supposed to oversee tackling a type
fire he had never seen before.

Looks like the fire service will be blamed whilst the company directors who made the decision over the cladding avoid corporate manslaughter charges.

The company directors and councillors have probably got lawyers pushing back their involvement in the Inquiry past the peak of the media glare. They are probably banking on the blame sticking with the Fire Service. No doubt there are lessons to be learnt for the Fire Service but it feels like a kangaroo court.

This is the schedule for phase one of the investigation....

Phase one schedule
Phase 1 will focus on the factual narrative of the events of the night of 14 June 2017. This will include:

  • the existing fire safety and prevention measures at Grenfell Tower;
  • where and how the fire started;
  • the development of the fire and smoke;
  • how the fire and smoke spread from its original seat to other parts of the building;
  • the chain of events before the decision was made that there was no further savable life in the building; and
  • the evacuation of residents.
Phase 2 will address the remainder of the List of Issues to be investigated.

I appreciate what you say around going above and beyond which the firefighter did, the point that i was trying to make was that the 'failure to follow procedure' did not result in any criticism or scapegoating (at the time of the hearing) in fact the opposite.

The other things that came out of yesterday

  • Possibility that the stairwells were not numbered.
  • No premises information box ( information about floor plans / cut off switches / Utilities etc etc ) which should have been in place.
  • No updated floor plans on the fire services database following the refurb of the tower

The link to Phase 2 of the enquiry is here

This deals in detail with the construction and refurb ... who authorised what etc

Thanks for the helpful information. I still find the order of the Inquiry counter intuitive but I will see what comes out of the rest of the Inquiry.

I agree.

I don't think the PM would have wanted an inquiry without the 'correct' verdict in her eyes.

Blame the firefighters who's funding has been cut by her foreign secretary when he was Mayor.

Simple, the vast majority of onlookers will be bored stiff and will have tuned out by the time they get to phase 2.
