Grenfell Tower block disaster

The sprinkler system would have cost £300k and the lift £60k. Instead they invested in cladding so the rich locals didn't have to put up with an eyesore.

Looks like wrong insulation used in the cladding, should always use a non combustible on buildings over 18 metres. I have seen videos from Insulation manufacturers and use the wrong one and the spread of flame its incredibly fast.
Horrendous accident which i'm sure could have been avoided.

Its not to put up with an eyesore, its to make them more thermally efficient and save on heating bills, and then they will also make them more pleasing to the ye, as most 60's and 70's buildings are awful to look at.

I saw this last year and thought it was a brilliant idea for fires and other types of high rise emergencies. Not sure if it is applicable with flames outside but it might be a better option than jumping

Driving into work through Salford this morning and there are a lot of 1960s tower blocks with face lifted cladding on the front of it. If you go across other areas like Ancoats and Harpurhey and Prestwich there's a lot more. There must be hundreds of buildings with cladding on across the Uk time for the Government and local authorities to get their heads together and decide if these other buildings would survive what happened yesterday or have it all removed.

Are you sure about that? Because the planning application suggests that the prime motivation was the living conditions of those who have to look at the building rather than those who actually had to live in it.

The materials used were chosen “to accord with the development plan by ensuring that the character and appearance of the area are preserved and living conditions of those living near the development suitably protected,” according to the same report.

Yes the cladding board they chose was clearly to improve the look, which wouldn't be difficult to do. However that is not the reason to clad with new insulation behind the cladding. That is for the reason i said before. Of course they want it to look better at the time.

another part of the report you seem to have left out
The council noted that the cladding would also improve insulation, helping keep sound and cold out from the building, and improve ventilation. An environmental statement said that the "primary driver behind the refurbishment" was to address the insulation and air tightness.

The reasons for cladding might be for all those reasons but using stuff that burns is a disgrace.

I've just spoken to my caretaker and he says our refurb will now not be going ahead.

I hope he's right or there will be riots in Blackley

As long as they use the correct insulation and fire stop products it will be fine

Not sure, but presumably every floor and every room will have to be painstakingly photographed just in case there has to be a criminal investigation. Could be a long and horrible task.

Just saw on the news that people are being treated for the effects of cyanide poisoning from foam in furniture.

How the fuck can anything that produces cyanide be allowed in the first place?
