Grenfell Tower block disaster

Dear Cherished Posters

Could you please keep your shite antiquated views of the left and right of the political spectrum, including your life affirming entrenched views out of this thread that is about a trade by that has claimed the lives of 58 people, and counting, and has affected the lives of so many others.

Those of you bickering about 'May did this' 'Corbyn didn't do that', the banks were to blame, it's a capitalist plot etc fucking etc should hang your heads in shame.

There are plenty of threads on blue moon for you to pedal round the cycles of hell but leave this to facts and understanding of the fire.

Bans will be issued, and not thread bans, for those that persist in this inane bickering.

Say what you will about the Yanks and their society being in thrall to rapacious capitalism, but on certain public policy issues, such as building codes, they are strict as fuck. Far stricter than us I'll wager.
I'm not sure that is true, if it was, why every time there is a tornado/hurricane/flood are their wooden houses flattened like matchsticks, with often quite a few fatalities ? Not that we should be worrying about another countries regulations, we just need to get ours up to scratch, clearly this incident says we have along way to go.

Robust regulations will get you a long way but not guarantee safety. The are other / related key factors like learning from near misses and encouraging reporting of such, rather than blaming people. That's the approach taken in the airline industry and Health Services are trying to encouraging similar learning cultures.

Who decide the regs? or rather who advises the government on the regs,
Is it independent & impartial, or do the highest paying lobbyists get the nod?

In my flat I have no gas supply to the kitchen, because gas cookers got banned from flats in 2008, which I fully accept and believe is the right thing.
what I don't understand, why am I allowed a gas combi boiler in the bedroom, it seems a bit contradictory.

I came in to see what the point scoring loons and conspiracy theorists would be making out of this tragedy - and instead found this common sense post ..... Amen!!!

Of course regulation alone isn't enough, but its clear some of ours are not up to the job.

The most important thing will be the inquest, and hopefully nothing is covered up, the public enquiry to follow needs to get to the bottom of everything including the numbers of people involved in the rescue, though reading the harrowing account posted by @Blue Maverick , it doesn't sound to me like those there could have done any more, and that more people probably wouldn't have helped all that much.

Sadly we've been consistently asking for this since the day it happened, but some simply can't help themselves.

I've heard that there will be an enquiry but whether there will be an inquest has not been established yet, I think. That would presumably only be confirmed following the police investigation.

The harrowing account shared by Blue Maverick, reinforced our understanding of the heroism shown by our Emegency Services. Also from this report, one of the many issues the inquiry might look at is whether our Fire Services have the equipment to fight fires in building above 20 floors.

There was a lot of bravery shown by some of the residents as well. I haven't seen the account myself but my mum told me that a guy wouldn't try to escape from his flat on the 23rd floor because there was no escape for his two Staffordshire Bull Terriers. He wouldn't let his dogs die alone.

You make a fair point, but I still stand by my original point in the context of larger buildings in urban settings.
