Grenfell Tower block disaster

Awful tragedy.

I used to live on the 10th floor of a tower block in Ashton and this was always a huge fear. I was resigned to not getting out if a fire started on a lower floor.

I can't tell you how grateful I am to be out of there and how much sorrow I feel for these people

I can see why, mate. It only takes a single fault or act of negligence to cause a major risk. All the more reason why safety standards need to be 100%.

Eye-witness on BBC saying that the building was engulfed within 30 minutes and that fire engines couldn't all get close to it because of geographical obstructions.

my old housemates used to mock me for turning everything off before i left the house, i do not trust any electric appliance to be left on all day

Horrific, it looks like the cladding (which I thought had to be fire proof) as caught fire from the original house fire, and spread up and around the building very quickly. The residents have been complaining about the fire risk for a long time and they have been ignored. No sprinkler system, no fire alarm system for the building. Absolute shocking in this day and age. Condolences to the families of those who have died.

Lots of these type of flats in Salford and along Oldham Road to name a few, hope the same stuff to refurb them wasn't used never mind elsewhere around the country.
If so will cost millions to sort ffs.

Jesus Christ I Hope they got out, its like Towering inferno.

Except in Towering Inferno there wasn't any smoke.

Just heard a report that "large numbers" escaped. Hopefully thats encouraging, although "large numbers" could be anything.

I thought buildings like this had tanks of water on the roof and sprinkler systems - clearly not. It appears above floor 6 there was no alarm and no way of fighting a fire. Hence the advice to stay in your appartment but the fire spread quickly so that advice (to stay in your apartment) was useless. Heads should roll when the inquest into this nightmare commences.

One thing that makes me sick is how the TV media report on this. They revel in peoples misery and pretty much glorify in who horrific and tragic this is. Watching ITV now and just interviewing some poor woman reading her snapchat messages with someone trapped inside last night, who presumably is now dead. Imagine some relative / friends watching that and finding out on ITv news your loved ones are dead, all for a few extra viewing figures. Makes me sick.

Next time you hear a politician going on about getting rid of the red tape that holds back investment think about today.

Ask Boris fucking Johnson that **** shut 10 stations in London
Not really a time to turn this into a political argument is it? The failings in infrastructure (if any) will come out in the wash

That's 24 hour news for you... It's an American trend that I hate... not only do the likes of Kate (the Snake) Burley pray on emotions but it then goes onto a reel and replays every 30 minutes... I know we have an off button but it is unbearable regardless

I'd urge everyone to give that a read. Absolutely unbelievable. All in the richest borough of London too.

Not read the article but I know a bit about the location as the building one of my clients is based in is currently being used as an evacuation centre. In fact, under normal circumstances, I'd be there today. The area has some of the poorest, underprivileged people in the country.

This is a horrific event and my heart goes out to any one affected by it.

My thoughts are with all those affected by this tragedy.
A tragedy more often associated with third world slums.
Mis management, profit masquerading as nfp.
poor lives not as important as lavish lifestyle.
We can only pray that someone in the Police has the bottle to carry out a real investigation.

Ive turned it off, cannot stomach it to be honest. Families who no doubt fear the absolute worst having the innevitable shoved down their throat by Piers Morgan and Suzanna Reid. Its like they feel the need to sensationalise what is already a once in a lifetime event.

It's modern journalism.... but they call it progress
