guess next season's squad

We've already signed Gundogan and Demichelis is leaving so as it stands we have 18 foreign players for our Champions League squad which is 1 too many. Denayer returning doesn't effect our numbers as he would be the only club produced player in our squad. We have 4 association trained players in the squad in Hart, Clichy, Delph and Sterling.

If we sign Laporte, Stones, Aubameyang and Sane then we need to ship 4 out as Stones is association trained - but Yaya, Zabaleta, Kolarov, Mangala and Bony are all likely departures. Means we would only 2 specialist full backs in the squad.

It would appear that City have briefed that Fernando and Navas are staying but Nasri is leaving.

As for sub keeper either Willy is staying or he will be sold and most likely replaced by a foreign keeper.

In terms of squad break down if the above happens we would have 5 association trained players in Hart, Clichy, Stones, Delph and Sterling

14 foreign players in Willy/New keeper, Sagna, Kompany, Otamendi, Laporte, Gundogan, Fernandinho, Fernando, De Bruyne, Silva, Navas, Sergio, Aubameyang and Kelechi.

That would give us two spots to play with to fill 3 positions- left back, right back and centre midfielder.

If the above plays out I could see Delph being sacrificed as we would already have our 4 association trained players. Unless there is another surprise departure but it's hard to see who that could be.
No need to register Kelechi though.
Think that's wrong, he's not eligible as locally trained until January next year I believe

Honestly, this is what it's shaping up to be to me (if we manage to sign Aubameyang, which I'm doubting tbh). This would be a good summer in fairness, but I'd be very disappointed if we don't sign another CM before the start of the season, I don't think Delph and Fernando are good enough understudies, not for Pep.

John Stones (Everton)
Aymeric Laporte (Athletic Bilbao)
Ilkay Gundogan (Borussia Dortmund)
Leroy Sané (Schalke)
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Borussia Dortmund)

---------------------Hart
------Stones-----Kompany-----Laporte
-----------Gundogan---Ferna
----Sané--------De Bruyne----Sterling
---------Aubameyang----Aguero

---------------------Kelechi
------Barker---------Silva-------------Navas
-----------------Delph-----Fernando
----Clichy----Denayer---Otamendi----Sagna
---------------------Caballero

Hart, Caballero, Gunn
Sagna, Maffeo
Kompany, Laporte, Stones, Otamendi, Denayer
Clichy, Angeliño
Gundogan, Fernandinho, Fernando, Delph, A. Garcia, Byrne
De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Sané, Navas, Barker
Aguero, Aubameyang, Iheanacho, Sobrino

I've said it'll be a 3-6-1 for months, thinking it would be a 2-2 midfield instead of a 1-2-1 diamond which would allow both De Bruyne and Silva to play a variation of a traditional No.10 role. But this also allows more flexibility during a game (e.g. Alonso and the wingers dropping back to make it a 4-3-3/4-5-1) so makes more sense. That's why we pay Pep the big bucks.

If we're to get both Laporte and Stones I can't see us benching kompany when he's fit hence why I reckon we'll play with 3 at the back

Also I'm not convinced that we'll end up spending 40 mill on stones for him to play in a midfield 3 which is another reason why I think we might play with 3 at the back

The following are just more likely, moving Laporte to leftback when Komp is fit. Or benching Komps if he proves inferior or Stones if he proves Inferior. The point is, it will be a competition and the inferior player will be benched. You don't need 3 at the back.

We won't play 3 at the back all the time of course because pep likes to change formation depending on who we're playing but imo I can see us playing with 3 at the back most of the time

I think we'd mostly play 3 at the back only if injury forces it. When everyone is fit, I expect the base formation to have 4 defenders.

Fair enough

If everyone's fit and assuming we get the players we've been linked with who do you reckon we'll play and what formation?

Do people really think we will play 3 at the back? I reckon we are more likely to play 4-3-3 personally.

The whole academy setup shifted to this a couple of seasons ago and that will have been driven by pep's arrival and influence.

I think it will change vlike it does at Bayern and at Barca.

But my sense is the following will get the most games barring injury: I

Hart, DeBryune, Aguero, Gundogan, Laporte, Aubameyang, Clichy (assuming no one is brought in), Sagna, Kompany, Silva, Sane, Otamendi, Dihno,, Sterling.

The above 14 will get the majority of games barring injury.

My guess will be
Hart
Sagna...Komps..Laporte.. Clichy
....,........Gundogan............
........Silva..............DeBryune....
Sane.....,.............................Auba
....................Aguero

----------------------------------Hart/Ederson

----Stones/Denayer/Sagna - Kompany/Otamendi - Laporte

Sterling/Navas - Gundogan - Fernandinho/Fernando - Clichy

------------------------------De Bruyne/Silva/Sane

---------------------Aguero/Iheanacho - Aubameyang

Do think we seem to be gearing more towards a 3 at the back setup next season and Pep seems to be liking that formation more and more.

Obviously I hope we buy someone for the left but can't think of anyone we've been linked to.

I'll just do a starting 11

---------------Hart
Sagna -Kompany-Stones-Clichy
---Fernandinho---Gundogan
------De Bruyne----Silva
--------Aguero---Sterling

Not liking the defence. I like Kompany obviously. But as a pair with Stones? Left foot right foot. Full backs are both poor going forward too.

We still have four full backs. Its going to be hard to shift Kolarov because of his wages, we've not heard anything about Zab yet and Sagna and Clichy are staying on. I can't see us playing 3 at the back.

Keeping all 4 of Zabaleta, Sagna, Clichy and Kolarov is not ideal but we don't have to solve all the deficiencies of our squad in one transfer window.

If we finish the summer having acquired Stones, Laporte, Gundogan, Aubameyang and Sané we will have made a significant improvement to our squad and starting XI.

We can tackle the full back position in January or next summer if need be. I also think Sagna/Clichy have got one more season in them, Zabaleta/Kolarov are not bad backups and Maffeo/Angelino may get some game time to reduce their workload.

I do think we need another CM though. Fernando, Fernandinho and Gundogan is not enough unless Silva drops deeper and the 2 Garcias are in Pep's plans.

So at the moment it the squad seems to be shaping up like this:

Home Grown:

1) Hart
2) Clichy
3) Sterling
4) Delph
5) Stones

Unfortunately none of these players are club trained, so for UEFA Competitions, only 4 of them can go on the HG list.

Foreign:

1) Kompany
2) Laporte
3) Otamendi
4) Sagna
5) Gundogan
6) Silva
7) Fernandinho
8) Fernando
9) KDB
10) Navas
11) Iheanacho
12) Caballero/Other foreign keeper
13)[Home Grown #5]
14)..........
15)..........
16)..........
17)..........

For those 4 remaining spaces we have :

Yaya
Nasri
Bony
Mangala
Zabaleta
Kolarov
Aubameyang
Sané

Lets assume we get our targets, that leaves us 2 places for :

Yaya
Nasri
Bony
Otamendi/Mangala
Zabaleta
Kolarov

Bony seems obviously out the door. ITK's seem to think Nasri is going. Kolarov needs to go IMO, so that narrows it down to 2 places for 3 players. Mangala, Yaya, Zabaleta.

Yaya seems 50/50 but losing him would mean we're light in midfield.

And that means it's down to Mangala or Zabaleta.

I don't see Denayer?
