After some advice on acoustics. I fancy getting one. I have about 1k - 1.5k to spend.
Would I better off getting a 2nd hand one? Or would folks recommend one if the Epiphone inspired by Gibson custom shop ones?
I don't really care about the make. I just want a decent one.
All recommendations will be greatly received.
For my 20p's-worth - definitely buy second hand and I would look around the range of Yamaha, Takamine & Tanglewood range.

You can get a very good acoustic for less than a grand so you don't necessarily need to spend that much. Go and try a few out so you start get a feel for the touch and sound you are after.

Trusted sellers on eBay and the like have been very good to me over the last decade.

Best of all, buying a decent acoustic will definitely hold it's value if not appreciate.

Let us know how you go or if you get to narrowing it down............

You have a decent budget there so will have no problem finding a nice guitar.
First thing is you 100% need a solid top. Most of the tone comes from the top.
If you intend to look after it then solid back and sides are well worth getting. If you intend to take it to campfires and beaches then laminate back and sides will cope with it better, at the expense of sound quality.

I am a huge Martin fan (i have several) but I wouldn't recommend you get one with that budget. You'd be buying something like an X series and quite frankly they are terrible. The Road Series are much better though.
Again I don't think I'd go for a Taylor unless you were going higher up the range.

Don't touch Fender- their acoustics are crap.

I would highly recommend Godin and their sub brand Seagull. Handmade in Canada and great value for money. Many have a Cedar top which is very soft and won't improve with age but they are excellent guitars.

Eastman are another to try- again they offer great value for money although be prepared to try a few to pick the best as they do vary.

Yamaha do some very nice guitars but also some very cheap ones so you need to be sure what you are looking at. Takamine are in the same sort of description and the American built Guilds are really very nice.

You do have to consider what you want to play on it as that can influence the body size- a Dreadnaught has a big sound to go with it's big body and is good for strumming, but smaller bodies are typically better for fingerpicking and singer/songwriter type stuff. Smaller bodies are also much more comfy as a couch guitar. I find I pick up my 0 size which is tiny, much more than a Dreadnaught. OM/000 is often a good sweet spot compromise for many people.

Mahogany back and sides sounds quite different to Rosewood or Maple. Try a few different tone wood combinations to see what you like.

A few pointers there- feel free to ask if you have specific questions

Be prepared to get the guitar in for a decent setup after you've bought it. The better specialist shops will do one anyway but most guitars will benefit from a skilled pair of hands sorting it out. Few are perfect straight from the box.

Cheers gentlemen. Thank you for all your replies. I am going to have a good look at your recommendations over the weekend.
I have been looking at the guitar in the link. I would like your thoughts on that if possible.

In regards to my usage of said guitar. I have said that I am basically a beginner and making slow progress. My aim really is to make electro pop tunes. There is a local guitar group who meet on a Thursday night. But, you have to have an acoustic. I am hoping that playing with other people will help me improve.

It would also be nice to have something to practice on when I come back to my parents and family in Manchester. Its a ballache bringing an amp and what not.

There is a little practice amp that you plug into the jack of the guitar, charged by USB and it lasts a while or you can leep the USB in. It has tone and volume and 3 settings, its surprisingly very good to practice with. I use it all the time with the tv playing over songs on Spotify or you tube. Just noodling on its own is good. My amp and guitar effects machine are just too loud sometimes. Plus I keep it all upstairs.
Its great if you can't be arsed plugging every in and you dont want anything too loud.

Its nice to have an acoustic and electric by your side when practising I find.

Although you may be snubbed for abandoning your roots buying such a lovely looking guitar ;-)

I would still suggest trying the other brands suggested where possible as your money really can go further without compromising on sound, quality and feel.

I say that very very aware that I have just purchased a Les Paul..............

You'll need a white stetson hat and cowboy boots with spurs if you're going to be toting that around :-)

Seriously though my two main things to note are the Maple back and the neck shape.
The maple will be a very bright top end sound, and with the large body it should have a ton of bass so overall it will have a distinctive sound. Not that that's a bad thing but just make sure that the sound is the one you want.
Secondly the neck will be a very full C profile, which is very different to many guitars on the market today which tend to be skinnier. Again it is all about whether that suits your particular hands. If you are used to a slinky electric neck for example, chunkier C profiles can feel very cumbersome for a while.

Go and try as many guitars as possible, but keep an open mind. See if you can narrow down what you like/dislike about each one and work with the shop to find "that" guitar. Be prepared to walk out empty handed though- there's always another shop

Beautiful guitar

I think I am going to go for this, rather than the Epiphone.

I've got the older version of the epiphone
guitar (ej200). I paid 300 for mine second hand. Its basically the same although the electronics probably not as good. Same factory in Indonesia.

My advice is buy a bit cheaper and maybe buy 2. Find what you like. I'm planning on moving on from mine as its a bit big. It has a big sound but there is a balance between easy to live with and sound quality. Some top guitar tracks are recorded on small cheap instruments. Don't get sucked into the quality of build etc. You just have to find one you love playing and the sound takes care of itself. Find they type, then get a quality one.

I got the Eastman E20 SS.
I went to Project Music in Exeter and tried a few different ones in that price range. This one sounds far nicer than the other Eastman I was looking at and it feels a lot nicer than the Taylor ones at that price point. My PRS electric feels really cheap and cumbersome, in comparison.
Next on the list is a Les Paul. But, that will be this time next year. Hopefully I will be a better player by then.

I want a new acoustic guitar. I'm skint so it has to be between 150-200 quid. Just to play for myself. I've looked at the Fender mahogany acoustic on Amazon for around 160. What's better, dreadnought or concert? Any tips?

I prefer dreadnoughts but again it's gonna come back to personal preference and comfort.

I really wouldn't buy new - your money will go further with a bit of research and patience in my opinion matey (and better for us and in the environment in the long run) ;-)

Just having a quick scroll and I've picked these fairly quickly.

(Yes this first one has damage but I actually think it adds to its uniqueness and mystique). Shouldn't be compromising the playability or sound return.

I didn't think of looking at used ones. I'll look more..

If you're just playing at home comfort will probably be higher on your wishlist than volume so smaller bodies might suit better. Don't buy Fender acoustics- they are terrible.
I agree with Onholiday- used would offer you much better value and choice at your pricepoint.
