Gundogan injury v West Brom | Confirmed not serious by Ilkay

That's the thing that Guardiola ought to ask: why do referees speak to some players (very often established British players, I'm afraid) for repeated fouling, yet others are booked for the very same first offences?
Two of our yellows were for dissent which is for whatever reason now seen as some sort of blasphemy, while targeting a player and taking turns in kicking the shit out of him is I guess something which proper football men do, so it's mostly okay. Worst thing was that Sane's stupid response came just minutes after Gundogan's injury so it was understandable that some of our players were still frustrated about it. And yet, Jones decided he doesn't need to talk to him if he can show a yellow...

I'm no athlete, but I would imagine that very, very few players would have been able to continue after having been a victim to that 'tackle' last night. Gundogan did not go off because he 'is injury prone', he didn't go off because he 'was just back' or 'not used to the rigours of the English game', he went off because he was on the end of a quite cynical and vicious challenge, the likes of which can only ever be eradicated from the game if the referee applies the law correctly.

Agreed. What I really don't like is how referees adopt this "Well, your stupidity leaves me no option but to book you" stance when dealing with dissent, yet they seem to be far more flexible and tolerant of the physical challenges that in themselves lead to the dissent being shown.

I agree with this 100%

The sort of refereeing we saw last night will do nothing to improve the skill levels in the English game; it rewards 'traditional' rough-house tactics to counter a more skillful opponent. Pulis' side got away with as much as they could, after all it's a competition and they will do whatever the officials allow. I don't blame them, although neither do I condone it. It's very much for the FA to determine and manage what we want to see at the top level of our game; do we want technically gifted players with silky skills, or physical, questionably legitimate challenges and the long-ball game? We don't want to see diving and cheating and the type of histrionics seen in a great deal of European football, but the FA need to have a good hard look at games like last night's and realise that allowing the level of officialdom seen at the Hawthorns will undermine the PL and damage the game.

I fear for Gundogan that he may become the new Owen Hargreaves which is sad because like him he has so much promise. He took of a bit of a knock last night but there's no point trying to make excuses up that is the reality of the premiership. You will get these big clumsy oafs that want to sort out because they know that they can't beat you otherwise.

Hopefully he will prove me wrong but I think that the gamble we took on him with his injuries isn't going to pay off.
