Both books are interesting and for those not around in those days give an insight into the violence, both casual and organised that was part and parcel of going to a game in those days. Some went looking for a fight but most just wanted to go to the game, have a drink and a banter and get home in one piece.Violence however often came upon you whether you wanted it or not, especially at away games.

I was suprised how the publishers put Rodneys book into print. It was a very hard read because it was like they just copied and printed someone's notes written on bits of paper, complete with all the errors, instead of arranging it properly.

It seems odd now seeing those dark times returning here and there in flashes at games,Cardiff and Chelsea in the cup spring to mind.It is a worrying trend because this is how it sparked off years ago.People fed up with other clubs fans arriving on your patch and ground and taking liberties decided to do something about it and so got together to stop it happening. This then escalates and the police have to nip it in the bud quickly or we will be back to square one before we know it.

Having watched City through those dark days like many older Blues I don't think it will come back as the cops are too in control and the likely outcome is that you would be nicked / go down with all the CCTV etc nowadays.

In the 70s and 80s the cops didn't give a shit and you were basically on your own...can remember the cops joining in & attacking City fans when we played at Leeds in March 1975.

I've only read Micky Francis' book but found the angle on the first mixed-race and black faces stood on the terrace to be interesting. If anything, I prefer the novels by Kevin Sampson or John King to real life accounts. Let's face it, they were clearly based on first hand experience too!
