Haaland’s penalties…be careful what you wish for!

I agree Mark Ward was good but didn't he miss a couple in 90/91 which led to Alan Harper taking one at v Leeds (i think) at home which he ballooned over the bar, we then got another one later that game which I think Ward then scored
Harper's pen would have been described by Brian Clark on Piccadilly Radio as high, wide and handsome.

On Erling, I think as others have said you almost tell when he’s going to miss.

I think the waiting around kills his confidence, don’t know why. Always seems like he misses when we have had a lengthy VAR and there’s all the fucking about before it gets taken.

A reputation of missing penalties comes in handy when he scores the most goals in the PL.
Unlike his competition who rely on them to boost their total.

Remember seeing Szoboszlai's penalty record for the dippers a couple of weeks ago. He'd put every single penalty he'd ever taken in the exact same bottom corner and never missed. Maybe the trick is just repeating drilling it into the side netting until its second nature.

Haaland doesn't get the balance between power and precision of his penalty shots right. He errs on the side of precision.

It's risky to apply too much force, but he can learn a thing or two from Kane who gets the balance right most of the time (he misses too but so do CR and Messi...).
Yup. He rarely belts it in open play, just deception and precision there too.

I think pens are tricky these days, because the taker has to hang about for the almost inevitable var check. I think temperament is as important as technique. Erling does ok but I’d love to have a taker like Yaya or Balotelli again. I remember when Mario scored two pens vs Villa. Brad Friedel was so freaked out he didn’t even move for the second.

Actually we scored one, KdB in a 4-0 win durind covid, the same game Bernie had his legendary " I ain't clapping for you twats" with a cup of coffee.

Curiously, all the penalty misses against them didn't cost us ultimately, we won two of those games and the other two ended in draws with us eventually winning the league.
So we did!

Pretty telling that the one we scored was behind closed doors in a season where the title had already gone.

We seem to really struggle with pressure penalties.

The Mahrez miss at Anfield is probably the most annoyed I’ve been at all our penalty misses since Pep took over. We’re still feeling the effects of that miss now, with our ongoing terrible record at that ground. I’m sure winning that game back in 2018 would have meant we’d have won more there over the years.

I saw a few people wanting to take Erling off penalties after yesterday’s miss.

Just for the record the average chance of a penalty being scored is 77%

Haaland is on a career 84% (not just City) so be careful what you wish for!

More alarming is that we have only scored 20% of the last 5 penalties against Liverpool.

Not everyone is Yaya Toure.
Or Mario! I think Mario ne'er missed one for us. I thought that when three players were on the spot Haaland was gonna hand it to someone else. Where's Mahrez when there's a pen?

And that goalie for Dortmund when Mario equalised from the spot. He spent a moment or two trying to put Mario off but when he buried it he followed up by giving the goalie one of Paddington Bear's 'hard stares'!

Yep but even Haaland and Shearer missed a few tbf to Ward..
I do remember now Harper's miss against Leeds at Maine Road,a really bad pen that.

Before he took it they showed a graphic of where he puts them - probably two thirds to the left and a third to the right, where this one went.

None down the middle though.

I think he needs to throw in one or two down the middle to put a bit more doubt in the keepers mind.
He needs to strike them cleaner

Does anyone remember Gary Owen and his penalty style?
He scored quite a few for City which I never saw live, but I'm sure he was an accurate push kick penalty taker, like John Robertson at forest, the ball was always low into a corner.

Brad Friedel was so freaked out he didn’t even move for the second.
I think that's because keepers were starting to work out that Balotelli just waits for you to move one way or another and that casually slots it in other opposite side. The trouble is - as Friedel found - if they just stand there waiting then they have no chance of reaching it anyway, and they just look really silly just standing there watching the ball go in.
